1-0 up in the series , the final wicket was never going to be anything but a batters dream. Which is what England would have asked for and wanted.

Root is another "cautious" England captain. However, it does make me chuckle to hear pundit Michael Vaughan criticize England decisions as not being brave enough - he was very much of the same mindset when he was in charge on the field.

I might be tainted by rose tinted glasses, but I always thought Vaughan was the most innovative, creative thinking positive captain England had since Brearley. I really don't remember him ever being cautious in the field, or in his tactics. It was his England that scored 400 runs on the first day of an Ashes test, hardly cautious. I'll never forget that.

It's all about opinions though, so maybe he was another 'cautious' captain in some people's minds.

I think most English captains have been the cautious type, it goes with the job doesn’t it and it’s understandable to be cautious when the axe will fall on your head if you get it wrong.

I've got a feeling he'll get 600 and call it a day. He'll want it on his terms I think. This whole covid restrictions, not knowing what will be the next tour will force his hand.

Agreed, you can see them potentially looking at a tour to Dubai or something this winter but he won’t fancy their dull pitches and it’s a long wait until next summer and the uncertainties.

Coupled with his injury rate in recent years and the risks with that if I was him I’d seriously be considering retiring from test cricket once he hits 600

I'd be surprised if he calls it a day, purely because his bowling is still very, very good. If his influence was on the wane and his speed had droppoed significantly and you could see him imminently losing his spot then yes I'd probably say get this 600th victim today and call it a day. However in English or seam favourable conditions he and Broad are still the best England bowlers. There has to be a doubt over whether he goes overseas this winter, dependent on where we play but if he has the appetite I expect he'll be up for selection next May for an English summer.

The fact is there is still no better bowler in world cricket in English conditions than Jimmy Anderson. If he is still enjoying his international cricket then there's no reason to retire, unless his body packs up.

Just said on TMS, if he does it inside his first 7 balls, he will have got to 600 faster than the other 3 bowlers who are in the 600 club.
