England v Ireland at Crawley 7.00pm Friday

We'll sing a song, a soldier's song,
With cheering rousing chorus,
As round our blazing fires we throng,
The starry heavens o'er us;
Impatient for the coming fight,
And as we wait the morning's light,
Here in the silence of the night,
We'll chant a soldier's song.

Soldiers are we, whose lives are pledged to Ireland;
Some have come from a land beyond the wave.
Sworn to be free, No more our ancient sire land
Shall shelter the despot or the slave.
Tonight we man the gap of danger
In Erin's cause, come woe or weal
'Mid cannons' roar and rifles peal,
We'll chant a soldier's song.

In valley green, on towering crag,
Our fathers fought before us,
And conquered 'neath the same old flag
That's proudly floating o'er us.
We're children of a fighting race,
That never yet has known disgrace,
And as we march, the foe to face,
We'll chant a soldier's song.

Sons of the Gael! Men of the Pale!
The long watched day is breaking;
The serried ranks of Inisfail
Shall set the Tyrant quaking.
Our camp fires now are burning low;
See in the east a silv'ry glow,
Out yonder waits the Saxon foe,
So chant a soldier's song!

.....if you are wondering what they sing before the game :drink: :drink: :drink: :drink:

Possibly the worst rhyme in the English language.

Which is probably why they don't sing it in English :)

If the French sang their anthem in English, we'd be scared shitless:-

Let us go, children of the fatherland
Our day of Glory has arrived.
Against us stands tyranny,
The bloody flag is raised,
The bloody flag is raised.
Do you hear in the countryside
The roar of these savage soldiers
They come right into our arms
To cut the throats of your sons,
your country.

To arms, citizens!
Form up your battalions
Let us march, Let us march!
That their impure blood
Should water our fields

Or at all, generally :jester:

It was actually written in English and translated to Irish. And its pure shite in both. Should have been replaced ages ago but when the only suggestion for replacement is "Irelands Call" :nono: :nono:

That's scary :ohmy: But I've calmed myself down by imagining Frutie singing it in his high-pitched voice :lol:

It's not a terrible song if you ask me. What I really can't understand is the massive dislike of Ireland's Call that seems to run throughout the Ireland?

Perhaps not as a national anthem but as a sporting anthem its fantastic in my opinion - no coincidence in my opinion that when they wrote a new anthem for the 2005 Lions rugby tour they just ripped it off.

I think they should sing "The Sash my Father wore". That's all about Ireland isn't it? Would make a change.

Actually for some reason I can't get "The broad black brimmer" out of my head, all together now: "There's a uniform that's hanging in what's known as father's room....."
