I will leave it now but I can understand them being fitter etc but not the ability to hit the ball through the covers or square cut.
Perhaps because the fielding was completely shit compared to how it is now. Think about it.

Yeah, I think batsmen from a previous era would do fine. Not only have modern cricketers got more protection, they're also batting on covered wickets and have much better bats. The idea that someone like Bradman would struggle in modern cricket is laughable.

Bowlers of about 40+ years ago may struggle however - pitches are better and they get less help from the weather.
Bradman was a genius. Possibly the greatest of all time. So it's disingenuous to quote him imo. Of course him, or Tendulka would have scored runs in any era.

The massive difference is that teams nowadays, great teams, can't carry passengers in the field, or even as batsmen down the order. Look at the way that the role of the keeper has changed.

It's a totally different game.

I am n ot really as I have said I was brought up on Denis Compton Cyril Washbrook Peter May etc so expect our batsmen to be able to compare with them and our bowlers to Laker, Lock Snow etc and get frustrated when they do not. I think that it is down to too many limited over games.
No, it's not down to limited over games, it's down to you picking out some of our greatest ever players (not all from the same team, but spread across decades), and expecting our whole team to perform as well. That's just silly.

Just compare our team with the opposition. In One Day cricket, we've just won the world cup, after being the best One Day side for the last few years. In this test, we've done better than the Aussie's so far. Also take into account that the Aussies won the toss (meaning we'll be the side chasing a score on an old pitch) and we've lost Anderson. If Anderson hadn't got injured, I suspect we'd have won this test easily.

Yes, that's a true: tail-enders in those days were genuine tail-enders and, yes, keepers are expected to bat now. Look at the way that Les Ames was lauded for his ability to bat - he'd be run of the mill these days.

But good batsmen of that era were good batsmen. It's not just Bradman, any number of good players would survive in the modern world. Why is that we talk about cover driving, we still hold up Wally Hammond as the gold standard? He retired 70 years ago.

If I had a time machine, my first port of call would be to see Trumper bat. There are some people who saw him and Bradman bat say that Trumper was even better. I'd love to bring him back in my time machine and see how he got on.

Well yes. Look at SA without Steyn at the World Cup.

They screwed themselves by picking an unfit front line bowler. We're still in the game, and the series. Even if that's Jimmy done. Our greatest bowler ever.....

People love talking England down.

We'll win this series.

It would be fascinating. I think that modern fielding (which nobody can argue is light years ahead of that era) would make a big difference.

That's why there can be no comparison.

And, sorry to bang on about it, but fielding is so underrated when it comes to cricket comparisons. Even watching top end club cricket nowadays, it's WAY better than international cricket in the 80s fielding wise.

Everyone has to be totally on it, or you lose. No passengers.

The fast bowlers (and lazy fat spinners) have to be as good as the "specialist" fielders or they don't get in the team. That's down to U12 level as well, in Yorkshire anyway.

It's not "knock it to him and you're guaranteed two". Doesn't happen any more. That lad would be out of the team after a game or two.

Different game.

Jimmy will be a big miss, but it's even bigger in this game since we can't replace him.

Not impressed by Moeen this morning, no consistency.

Would really have helped him if he scored some runs, bringing a little bit of confidence from that onto the field would have helped. Instead he got out in really poor circumstances. I’d imagine he’s extremely low on confidence currently.

Don’t understand the field, we’ve essentially got a team 67/3 and the field isn’t that attacking even with your front line spinner bowling on a pitch that’s meant to be spinning heavily, they are just easily milking him right now.

Starting to think this has gone now. No real problems for the batsmen, ball now soft, Broad bowled out. Could be 280 to win batting last.

My point about comparisons is that Smith has got 50 so you expect him to go on to 100+ but not the same expectation for any England batsman.

I think that we will face an unachievable target 2nd innings and have to bat well to get the draw.

That’s because Smith is a world class batsman, 280 is still 200 runs away yet though and batting last this pitch certainly isn’t unplayable, Lyon will be trouble though

Moeen Ali being taken out of the attack, bowled absolute rubbish this morning... just what you need from your front line spinner when you’re a bowler down.
