James as number 1? I thought it was going to be a shootout between Green and Hart as first choice England 'keeper, but seems that James has got the nod.
Crouch as number 9; does that mean he's going to partner Rooney?

The rest seems pretty standard and as expected.

Yeah, I read James was given No 1 as a mark of respect to his seniority.

Makes sense, isn't that how the Italians do things? For example the Italy captain is usually the oldest or most senior player.

When I grow up, I want to be like Fabio (I already have the glasses).

Maybe, I know this is the first set of squad numbers under Capello, but looking back Eriksson nearly always had the numbers 1-11 as his first choice team. The last example I can find is Fowler as number 9 in 2002 (Heskey was 11, and Butt wearing 21 was in the first choice team).

He won't play Gerrard off Rooney. If he was going to do that, he probably would never even have taken Heskey.

Well according to Wikipedia both missed the tournament through injury. I honestly can't remember, but I'd imagine from the squad number (4) that it was probably Gerrard's originally, then when he got injured Murphy came in, and when he got injured Sinclair took it up.

Murphy was in. Had been given his Paul Smith suit, and Paul Smith luggage set and wallet, all with the cross of St George and his squad number stitched into it.

Then he got injured, and had to give it all to Sinclair.

Could be worse, like the ludicrous A-Z squad number system for outfield players that England employed in 1982, or the lowest shirt number by most caps that Scotland employed for Italia '90.

Or worse still, like the Argentina of old, who had Ossie Ardiles wearing the number 1 shirt outfield. That's just wrong.
