The methodology for calculating the rankings is pretty reasonable so to a degree the answer is what it is and of England are 4th, that is a reflection of their results over last four years. The gap between England and Spain is 397 points, ans big as the gap between England and Sweden in 17th, which probably actually underestimates the closeness of England (or anyone else expcept perhaps Germany) to Spain. It is more a reflection of "League" performance rather than "cup" and England's crpa performances at tournaments is masked by being at least OK in between.

Brazil and Argentina both going out in QF of 2011 Copa America has damged their rankings; conversely Uruguay winning it has cemented a 3rd place.

At the end of the day, you get nothing for a high ranking except seedings - worthwhile but we would all have taken the Ashleys to net their penalties instead...

England are realistically anywhere between 13th and 18th in the World - 6th-10th best in Europe

Yes ranked 4th, which really shows in a major tournament when we play a country ranked many places below us. You can make figures say anything you want, but fans know the truth.

Yay, today we are world beaters. World cup is nearly ours, must read The Sun to find out my real opinion on matters.

Didn't we beat them in the last 12 months when they were already world and European champions? A friendly admittedly but that's what I thought?

I was asking about in a major tournament, we always seem to come up short against anyone decent
