I don't like it when any anthem is booed, but assume our fans did it in retaliation to theirs -both have since been charged with this. Is this righteous indignation by UEFA or an attempt to even things out? We do take match security quite seriously in this country, so that second charge seems odd to me - if there is a hard and fast rule that a percentage of national stewards should accompany the fans and this did not happen, then fair enough, but I have never heard of this apparent stipulation as to a certain number, and given that by all our accounts our fans behaved well, it seems equally odd that this should be worthy of a UEFA charge?

Yes, of course that may well be the case, and England fans abroad in the past have not been good ambassadors on all too frequent an occasion. But I still think it is odd for both of these charges - has anyone else heard of a UEFA charge of booing at an opposing team's anthem? I am not saying for one moment it should be tolerated, just thinking "why now?" when there are so many historic rivalries throughout Europe, and not all just confined to the sporting arena, when I am sure this will have happened before. Doesn't excuse our fans doing it, and if the Bulgarians had done it beforehand, then we should have risen above that, but again -why now?

Yes. It’s an explicit UEFA law and clubs have been charged before. Man City in the CL for example.

It’s a moronic and disrespectful thing to do and the law is explicit. If fans boo they can’t complain if their club or nation gets charged.

Yep. Booing of anthems often seems to be retaliation.

In itself, booing an anthem is not a massive problem to me. Nobody gets hurt and it's all a bit pantomime. It just seems to accompany the general, "we're better than everyone else because we're English" attitude that some, (emphasis on the word some) travelling England supporters have. It's the same mindset which leads to the pissing in town squares, pushing locals in fountains and lobbing beer at people on boats etc etc.

I'm angry and embarrassed that we continue to do this and I think it's been over defended on this board.

Not loads of reasons to be proud to be English you're right. But our anthem is about god saving the queen. She isn't the cause of our problems. Voting the government out at the earliest opportunity is a far more rational response.
