We have solar panels and so for a few years now have learnt to do high energy tasks during daylight [dishwasher / washing machine / ironing / tumble-dryer / etc] but the one [anytime] device is the kettle.
This winter we plan to boil up a full-ish kettle late afternoon [still daylight] and store in a large thermos flask so the evening coffee will not require a non-solar assisted kettle boil.
This feels like really small / fiddley change but if it saves me 365 kettle boils per year, here are my sums:

1 kettle boil takes 2 minutes and our kettle is 2Kw so 365 boils is ~12KwH per year at 34p [new 2 year cap KwH unit charge] will save me errrm £4
If you have to buy the flask [say £4], payback will start at the beginning of year 2.
Is it worthwhile?

There was a lady on the Martin Lewis show this week living in a 3 bed house but with only 2 people living there - her usage meant that her monthly DD should be over £400 a month! Some people clearly need some serious energy saving advice.

Given the current capped prices of 10.3p/kWh for gas and 34.0p/kWh for electricity, the relative costs are:

Gas - 0.356 * 10.3 = 3.66p / kettle boil

Electricity - 0.1084 * 34 = 3.68p / kettle boil

I think it was to make the calcs easier and normalise the unit of water heated.

Its been relatively windy (45% renewable generation last week) and very mild recently. Hopefully we have been toping up our reserves of gas to smooth supply when things change.

Energy company automatically reduced my monthly payments down. I'm overpaying on purpose ya bastards so that if / when it gets really bad I've got a buffer in there.

thats how i understand it too, with extra complexity at the electricity price end. squeeze of no wind and everyone going gas (across northern europe) spikes the price for the electricity generated.

Yes - mine did the same. I just upped it again. You can also make one-off payments.

As a daily runner, I'd say it's been a bit mixed recently. Last week, some days running down Grand Avenue onto Worthing seafront, the headwind was so strong I was almost blown to a standstill.

There have been a couple of almost wind-less days though, but they are very much an exception.

This November was been as we could of hope for in reduced reliance on imported gas, mild and lots of wind (and rain of course). The worse type of weather of cloudy, still and pretty cold. Looks like a bit of that this week.

Can’t you take what you were previously overpaying and stick it in an interest earning bank account (albeit little interest)? Why would you want the energy company to earn off your ££?
