It seems to be wingnut week on NSC so considering the Mayans have predicted the end of the world on December 21st 2012 at 11 am GMT and we are away at Blackburn on the 22nd. Is it not only fair that The Albion and Blackburn`s big cheeses lock heads and make this game pay on the gate rather than we all fork out our well earned money in advance on a match that has 0-100% of actually happening

all they know (now) is that it is the end of the 5th sun, and the calendar "runs out of numbers" it its base 13 numerical system.

ive been over there and spoken to loads of maya daykeepers and guides, and they really just don't know what it means.

generally, they see this date as a gateway / opportunity.

saying that, in blackburn, it feels like the world has ended anyway.

I think you'll find it was some barmpot American revisionist writer saying that in 1980, not the Mayans.

It's true that the so-called long-count calendar—which spans roughly 5,125 years starting in 3114 B.C.—reaches the end of a cycle on December 21, 2012.

That day brings to a close the 13th Bak'tun, an almost 400-year period in the Maya long-count calendar.

But rather than moving to the next Bak'tun, the calendar will reset at the end of the 13th cycle, akin to the way a 1960s automobile would click over at mile 99,999.9 and reset to zero.

"We, of course, know that really means a hundred thousand [miles] and not zero," said William Saturno, an expert on Maya archaeology at Boston University.

"So, is [the end of Bak'tun 13] a large period ending? Yes. Did the Maya like period endings? Yes," Saturno said.

"Would this have been a period ending they thought was wicked cool? You bet. The biggest period endings they experience are Bak'tun endings."

But "was it predicted to be the end the world? No. That's just us."

But dont let facts get in the way of a sensational story

It should be designated a Day of Morning.

I'm not going to book transport yet............Do you think they have to give reasonable advance warning if the prediction is going to be cancelled?

The Mayans didn't predict the end of the world in 2012 it was the History Channel.
