End of the road for the seagull love review?

Sorry mate. Very rarely return comment to someone on here, but in this instance I have no choice. The TSLR over-reaction that day (to little more than a non-incident that every other fan either ignored or peacefully derided) was quite frankly awful, rabid almost. It also came at a point when the Albion needed our total support having conceded. I have never been spoken to at a football match the way those fools spoke to me that day. Didn't ruin my day (bunch of silly students who have barely lived) but it certainly meant I would never buy their zine. Fair play for them for producing it, that sort of thing takes massive effort. But I have zero respect for them otherwise.

Exactly my thoughts as well so not clear why TSLR feel the need to produce a two page spread just because they do not believe in something, almost like a subversive attemt to impose personal opinions.

Tbh if they've got Brighton Bluenose and Coventry Gull saying they won't buy it then they're doing something very right and for that alone I'd buy a copy.

On the No Surrender chants, everyone knows those chants are associated with the far right, idiots might join in, but the knuckleheads who invariably start them tend to be the sort of people Nick Griffin had in his address book but before he re-invented himself as David Cameron.

They didn't just tell the perpetrators to shut up though (after a single half-hearted rendition of aforementioned song). Others fans did though, and shushed, or ignored them, etc. I was immediately behind the TSLR people in question and witnessed their instant over-reaction. They completely and utterly flipped spouting their own extreme political views, indiscriminantly abusing Albion fans in front of them, then turned around to do the same to those behind them (where me and my mates were stood). They called us racists, were verbally and physically abusive (gotta love their own non-confrontational politics), pushing and shoving, and then accused us all of never attending an Albion match in our lives (I have helped run an Albion travel service since 1991 and followed my team home/away since 74). Hence my view of them was somewhat tainted that day. And all that not long after going behind. In fact we told them exactly that, get behind the team. They were having none of it. Fortunately stewards were watching the entire episode and then hoiked them out.

Why do people chant such things, that are nothing to do with football or the Albion, when they are supposed to be supporting the team? They've travelled miles to watch them, paid a lot of money, then start on a chant suited to a demonstration. Surely if they want to chant that, they should be marching down a road somewhere in Ireland, or possibly outside Downing Street, then again, I thought we hadn't surrendered to the IRA anyway, so what is the point of the chant?

It's not political though is it, its celebration of the current patron saint of England (and elsewhere) being English and making a statement about hating a terrorist organisation who wanted to kill us.

Of course it's a political song.

The 'No Surrender' part of it has f*** all to do with celebrating Englishness. Anyone who thinks that that part of the 'song' is patriotic can keep their version of *ahem* patriotism. I'll celebrate my Englishness without feeling the need to round on someone else.

I agree with you! Certainly at a BRIGHTON game singing about St George and the IRA is about as relevant as singing Baa Baa Black Sheep. But in the 'offensiveness' stakes it is pretty mild, it's not like they were screaming "kill the niggers!" at any black players. By the sound of it (and I wasn't there) the reaction was OTT and has been rightly condemned.

although ... you won't find any political content in TSLR, if that is putting anyone off or turning anyone on (what double page spread is the poster talking about above?), and the whole hudds thing was regrettable on my part but can't speak for the others, oh well.

remember, a fanzine is not a public service, it's an alternative that will not suit all fans tastes, unfortunately.

we're lucky at the albion in that we have all these unoffcial media channels, namely NSC and albion roar, plus all the blogs. we're pleased to be part of that whole thing.

Errrrrrrrr...........I didn't actually say not to buy it though, did I?! Personally, I think that anyone who brings out a fanzine deserves the fans support - as long as it is half decent - unfortunately the one copy I bought was crap and I've never been back.

More to the point though I'm a little intrigued by your personal attack on me - who, I'm guessing, you don't know?
