From his whatsapp message he had training the next day. Why his representatives put him in that thing rather than a jet I guess we will never know.
No game for 9 days.

French media have reported that there was another person due to be onboard the flight, who refused to fly over concerns about the aircraft itself. I don't speak French and don't have the link to the site, a colleague was reading it out to me. I know it's easy to say in hindsight that it was a bad decision to fly, but that plane over water at night?

From BBC news :

Sala reportedly sent a WhatsApp voice message before the flight. Sounding conversational and jokey, he said he was "so scared". Media in Argentina reported he said: "I'm on a plane that looks like it's going to fall apart."

And.....

Guernsey Police is working on four possibilities, including that the "aircraft broke up on contact with the water, leaving them in the sea" and they "landed on water and made it into the life raft we know was on board".

"Our search area is prioritised on the life raft option," the force added.

What I find odd is that there has been no mention of a 'Mayday' radio call from the plane. Not only are there are airports (obviously) at Jesey and Guernsey but also one in Alderney. The local airline - Aurigny - used to be based there (dunno if they still are) Might I point out that many aircrew in WW2 survived for pretty long periods in little rubber boats in that part of the sea, But these days such boats usually have emergency beacons. No mention of these either.

The single-engine plane left Nantes, north-west France, at 19:15 on Monday and had been flying at 5,000ft (1,500m) over the Channel Islands when it contacted Jersey air traffic control requesting descent. It lost contact while at 2,300ft (700m) and disappeared off radar near the Casquets lighthouse, infamous among mariners as the site of many shipwrecks, eight miles (13km) north-west of Alderney.....

He also confirmed the club had not booked the plane and Sala had "made his own arrangements".

Re Aurigny, correct they were Alderney based (think the parent co was called Exxtor Aviation)......large no. of their planes were 40+ years old when I lived in the Channel Islands and used them regularly. Not sure now but at the time I believe they prided themselves on their accident record. The old Trislanders (3 props, bloody noisy) were great - we landed on the grass next to the runway once because ‘someone is on the tarmac’......

Reading the pilot’s forum is very interesting. Doesn’t bode well for Willie Mackay.

Agreed - apart for the technical reasons for why the aircraft went down, there may be a host of issues surrounding the legality of the flight. Which in turn could have consequences for those who arranged the flight, and, presumably the insurance coverage for the player. Very messy.

While very sad & horrible news for anyone that knew him I do wonder why he was on a private plane in the first place (well one that was not a business jet). Surely he would have been better to travel on easyjet or Ryan air , probably cheaper rather than a turbo prop light aircraft.

Just seems a very odd choice of aircraft for such a trip when there were better options.

Just seems a very odd choice of aircraft for such a trip when there were better options.

Let’s imagine the plane was owned by the players agent, the agent can charge Cardiff for travel expenses to line their own pockets rather than let their client travel on a commercial flight, which doesn’t benefit them financially. Maybe that would explain why the player was on an ill-equipped aircraft, flying in unfavourable conditions with a gas engineer as a pilot :eek:

This alone tells me all I need to know about the pilot. He was an accident waiting to happen. We will know in due course the licence status and legality of the flight. Speculation is a waste of time. It doesn't make the decision to go any more reasonable. What is legal is not always wise - and that is not an argument for tighter regs, it is an argument for exercising good judgement. Clearly lacking in this flight".

I have no interest in aircraft (hate flying) but have been reading that forum for years. It's a bit like NSC with a lot of arguing, but (for instance) they had worked out the probable fault with the Leicester tragedy quite quickly.

I respect the way they separate the condolences from the deeply nerdy technical discussions.

Maybe Nantes to Cardiff isn't a commercially viable route.
