Cheers - I see how that works now. I've definitely got a lot to learn about it all!
It’s pretty crazy what’s happening here, Twitter is now like watching Anakin Skywalker move to the dark side in real-time and live-tweeting his thoughts, and the rebel alliance all getting their accounts suspended for posting unflattering responses.

I think Mastodon is going to be an improvement in the long-term, but I pity the server admins atm, a large chunk of the world has basically binned Twitter off and are trying to migrate en-masse.

Antifa types will like Mastodon, and the rest will likely stick with Twitter long-term. The far-right tried to get everyone to move to various sites when the far-left was in charge, and it never worked for them. I don't see the far left being able to do the same.

I’m not so sure, a lot of the science, tech, and econ people I used to follow when I was on Twitter (some time ago) are now present on Mastodon, but the jackass to sane human ratio seems much more acceptable. One (US) guy described it as being like Canada on Mastodon, which made me chuckle.

I think this has been a big fast change, and a lot will depend on whether big media companies make the switch, but suspending NYT and WaPo journalists could potentially see big media leave the platform, and those guys who were suspended have all appeared on Mastodon.

Lots of sites advertise Twitter handles, *if* that starts switching to Mastodon, I can foresee Mastodon becoming the dominant platform.

I used to really enjoy Twitter, a couple of years ago I had quite a good humored non league fan account with about 2000 follower. One Saturday post match after a few beers I was simply listening some of the clubs I follow using an emoji to sum up the result, something like champagne for the winners, an X for a draw, a sad face for a loss, that type of thing. Clapton FC (one of the fan groups I’d had a good relationship with) had played out a really shit 0-0 draw, trying to be funny, trying to emphasize “meh” I simply used a ridiculous emoji, it was nearly the croissan, instead I used the water pistol as I’d never seen it before. Within a hour an account I’d had for about seven years was permanently suspended due to my “threat of violence“

only a couple of weeks previously I was following a situation where a number of fan groups had reported an individual based in Ireland that was using the most vile racist abuse on black premier league footballers, it took well over a week for Twitter to eventually close the account down and remove said tweets.

The other thing that annoys me is the amount of “bot accounts“ active. If you don’t know what they are they’re usually right wing, slagging off migrants or Nurses that dare to ask for more gruel, for example Check the profile, they’ll have about 6 followers despite being on Twitter since 2017, and with a user name like, say Fred Smith the handle will be something like
@Fred43567834598 (as much as I don’t agree with them, it’s not a crime to slag off migrants or nurses, I just think there should be a rule that these should be the ramblings of ‘real’ people)

Watching the stuff coming out under previous leadership is interesting.

FBI controlling aspects and shadow banning being a thing, despite them claiming it wasn’t

Well, I feel previous ownership were probably more balanced and less contrary, but really, no allegedly public space should actually be controlled by a small number of unaccountable people.

As for the FBI side of things, I think there’s an element of naivety if anyone believes that there’s no law enforcement communication/involvement in any US tech platform. The US is a nation where the rhetoric is all “land of the free” and the reality is mass surveillance of its own citizenry.

It seems Musk has progressed to banning people who have not breached any of Twitter’s rules, but simply requested his comment on a story that involved him.

Seth Abramson is a journalist, passionately democratic, but I think he is sometimes a but doommongery, and I wouldn 't say extreme in position (definitely left, not far left), but extmremely dramatic in predictions/hypothetical situations.

firstly, chap needs to calm down calling something on a glorified chat room "terrifying". secondly this shit policy will be gamed by any and all sides. i dont really know why he would believe only the far-right have the ability to band together. if its all so terrible, just leave.

Not new, it came out months ago.

FBI controls what people are allowed to say and not say on social media.

If such a thing happens in China or Russia we call it "evil censorship" etc. If it happens here, people just accept it as "protecting us from harmful information". A clear case of the powers that be reducing our intellectual capacity to unprecedented lows.

I can think of 3 reasons for this:

1 - The TESLA shareholders are NOT happy. He has to go and is trying to save face.

2- He's gone mental and wants to do a mass ban of all the people who don't like him.

3 - He deliberately wants to suspiciously suddenly "win" with millions of last minute votes and compare it to "election fraud" in America.

I’m sorry, I know I keep posting on this thread, but I’ve never seen such a well-established tech platform that’s been embedded in millions of peoples lives for so long crash and burn at this speed. I’m genuinely gobsmacked.

It seems Mastodon is winning the battle to be Twitter’s replacement as well.

Well, I think I've negotiated the sign-up on Mastodon. Suggestions for accounts to follow? Mostly news, music and sport?

I've found following people from other instances can be tricky, depending which profile page you access. Simplest way I found was copying the profile name into the search box.

(careful clicking below - they have autogenerated as 'mailto' links so will try to open your mail app if you click on them)

@bbcbreaking@news.twtr.plus serious news
@newsthump@mastodon.online satirical "news"
@APoD@botsin.space pretty space pictures
@stephenfry@mastodonapp.uk obligatory social media follow

Perfect, thanks! (Can I put you in charge of choosing my Christmas presents?)

Yes, the links are odd, and they'll need to do a lot of polishing if they want to go mainstream, with links alongside the usual FB / Twitter / Instagram, etc. on websites. But I'm happy to work with what they're offering, and see where it goes.

Graham Cluley - @gcluley@mastodon.green - he uses it, so that's good enough for me.

Elon lost his poll and is now saying that in future polls voters will have to have to have the blue tick verification.

So he bangs on about being a free speech absolutist, claims that Russia's claim on the Donbas should be decided by a twitter poll, and now that he's lost the vote on whether he should step down from being in charge of twitter, he decides to move the goal posts. Is anyone really surprised?
