Yes, went on Wed. The chorus is amazing. It's a kind of rehearsal for the London runs, so a few teething problems. I'd highly recommend from someone who rarely goes to the theatre, although would like to do more.

Is it as dark as the Sophocles play it is based on?

Saw Kristin Scott Thomas in the Sophocles version about 10 years ago. Amazing piece.

How is this one different? Modern script? Set in?

To have an Oscar winning actress, Brie Larson at the Theatre Royal Brighton is an event in itself. She was magificent in Room

I was underwhelmed by it. I echo the sentiment re the chorus though, they were superb. It felt very much like a rehearsal the night I went. I’ve seen the Strauss opera of this tale and it was far superior.
6/10 from me.

It's the third Elektra I've seen (not counting the opera) and I was pretty underwhelmed. It's a great play but it didn't really come alive for me, although the Chorus is excellent.

The chorus was brilliant. Anyone as puzzled as us about the airship?
I think the airship might have been Apollo … it went blue when Elektra was offering up prayers to him (honest). Brie Larsson good value in the lead role. I liked Clytemnestra - had a bit of nastiness about her. Orestes was terrific as the messenger but soppy as f when he revealed his true identity and purpose. I couldn’t take him seriously as vengeance incarnate. Aegisthus also a bit soppy. Play therefore lost its way in last third when these two came to the fore. So much so, in fact, that I dozed off and missed the last couple of minutes . Another old codger was happily snoring away late on, much to the amusement of Mrs Shuggie who also enjoyed it for the most part.

Surprised by the positive feedback of this, it’s getting absolutely rinsed in theatre communities for being pretentious, experimental shite which wasn’t billed as such. Lots of jokes about there being no interval because most wouldn’t come back afterwards. Even the The Argus, which gives basically every major production to visit 5*s only gave this 3*s, and the review certainly doesn’t read as a 3* review!

Apparently it’s just weird for the sake of being weird, Brie Larson using a soundboard to make weird echo effects and stuff.

I think I’ll wait until this is papering in London (the second half of the run is selling extremely poorly, even with an Oscar winner as the draw).

The Argus review was pretty much spot on.

Apparently it’s been cut since first preview, from 90 minutes to under 75 minutes, and they’ve cut some of the stuff causing unintentional laughter - like the paint guns

That explains why the running time didn't match the announcement in the foyer. It was still too long

I'm staggered the Argus gave it three stars. When I used to review for the Argus we were told that we had to go easy in our reviews - not give good reviews to think that were bad but to be generous in our star ratings. An Argus 3-star is probably a 2-star review
