Over there
I know art and it's value is subjective, but why the hell is this being tipped to fetch $80 million / £50 million at auction tommorrow?

In these times of recession and cutbacks i find it vulgar beyond belief.

But it doesn't even come close to this one

Paul Cezannes the card players that sold last year for $250.
Sorry to sound so pompous, but does anyone else find the price tags vulgar beyond belief. And do you find the paintings as joyless and dull as I do.

Art is a matter of choice....I find Turners paintings wonderful in colour ,light,composition....but find Piccaso,Damien Hurst, really obscene....however it is a matter of choice.

I'd like to know what commission Sotheby's make on that $119m. Whatever it is it aint bad for a few hours work and a geezer with a hammer (oh, and a bow tie probably).

20% standard auction commission, 6 months publicity & painting on show round the World prior

The thing with the scream is that its not even unique, he did a few of them.

I'm not into art but I went to the Munch museum in Oslo. It was bonkers. There was no-one there (middle of winter) and his paintings are - a) mostly massive and b) really creepy / dark.

I found the whole place really imposing.

I also felt short-changed when I found out The Scream that is in that museum is just one of a few knocking around

I believe that there are 4 versions in total and 3 are in museums, so the one sold yesterday is the only one "in private hands" - but it's still a (subjectively) crap painting!

I love Edvard Munch, no-one communicate pain, jealousy and hearbreak like him. The Scream is one of my least favourite of his.

I love Munch. Miserable as f***, but love the style. I've got his painting Anxiety. Very bleak poem on it about how everybody pretends they are ok but in reality are just nervous wrecks on a one way path to death. Great stuff.

I love the way his poetry and art match each other.

Is it to do with the fact that Art (unless it is stolen) is a relatively good investment. Over the years it will hold its value. In these troubled financial times, there are probably not many other investments that could be guaranteed to do the same.

Perhaps Liverpool should have bought a painting instead of Andy Carroll

:lolol:

They could hang it over the top of that famous "This is Anfield. Welcome to the buffet, please help yourself" sign above the player's tunnel.

My Peugeot 206 has held it's value better, in relative terms, than Andy Carroll. Liverpool could have spunked their money at the local second-hand dealership and it would have been a more worth-while investment.
