No contest - Eastwood by a Country mile, he has the consistency that Spielberg has always lacked

Eastwood, though I've yet to see many of his movies. Spielberg is just... corny and predictable. Close Encounters of the Third Kind is alright but the others are just... meh. Very forced. Fun if you like special effects, sentimental bullshit stories or happy endings that could be predicted from the moment you see his name.

Schindler's' List was the only Spielberg film I really liked and Jaws was ok, I like more of Eastwood's.
Mule was pretty bad though and so unrealistic, the fundamental idea was good, but when him as an old guy was pulling younger women and keeping up with their 'demands', utter bollox and was detrimental for the whole thing.
I would rather he stopped making films if they all end up like that, quit while ahead.

I've seen nearly all of Spielberg's films. I've only even heard of 7 of Eastwood's and seen just 1. So what exactly would be the criteria for judging a good film?

Eastwood is a fantastic film maker, but feel he has never really strayed from what he’s felt comfortable with, that is a strength in that he has refined his films (maybe with the exception of The 15:17 to Paris) into finely crafted gems. Spielberg on the other hand has taken risks, how many directors could make Jurassic Park and Schindler’s List around the same time? The Colour Purple and Empire of the Sun in between making 2 Indiana Jones films?

Both lists contain films I’ve loved, Empire of the Sun is perhaps one of the best book adaptions I’ve ever seen. Given the breadth of films, risks, ingenuity, got to be Spielberg for me, but a wonderful collection of films from both of them.

Clint Eastwood is the world’s greatest film star.

But Spielberg is the better director even if his glory days are long gone. But what glories they were!

That said, I think Eastwood’s first six directed films are vastly superior to Spielberg’s last six.

IMHO Spielberg's Greatest Hits far outweigh Eastwood's Greatest Hits. Surprised the voting is so close to be honest. Maybe it's a generational thing?

.

Clint...That list of films is incredible...

Though honourable mention to Saving Private Ryan, the only film I've cried at the end of.

Clint by a long long way. Spielberg has made some good films but Clints are much more enjoyable to watch. Million Dollar Baby
Or Schindlers List is a tough call though and Saving Private Ryan or Heartbreak Ridge?

There’s something a bit saccharine about some of Eastwood’s film making, the most recent one I watched, The Mule, as a contemporary film, had a dated feel to the story, the paint by numbers relationship with the ex wife and the daughter who wanted nothing to do with the flawed character he played, but it all turns out alright in the end and everything’s reconciled etc.

Some decent output from both of them, but there are far better directors who have done more with less cash being thrown at them by big fawning studios than either Spielberg or Eastwood.

Hmm what generation would prefer which director do you mean? I mean they are both old as... old.

Eastwood for me. No contest. And that's excluding that the other was responsible for the particularly egregious drivel that is Duel.

Only even heard of 6 on the Eastwood list, but 19 on the Spielberg list, so I guess it's him. Not a great cinema goer, me!

For me this is like comparing apples and pears. If this had been Spielberg v Lucas or Eastwood v Scorcese then it would make more sense - to me at least.

I chose Spielberg BUT that's because I know exactly what i'm getting from one of his films. With Eastwood he has a more diverse back catalogue and definitely makes excellent films but I would rarely go and see one of his films site unseen whereas with Spielberg I would.

Probably way to simplistic a reasoning for many on here but you pay your money you take your choice!
