hi all. i am coming to that very special stage in a student's life when the government decides to 'pay' me for doing f*** all. so, instead of just wasting all this 'free' cash on booze and drugs i've decided to actually get something i will use - a dvd writer.

unfortunately i don't really know how to go about buying one and thought some of you fine people might be able to give me a hand in terms of specs etc. all i want to do is to be able to download video files (usually in .avi format) and convert them into dvd's to watch on my standard dvd player or playstation 2. but is this an easy process? i've already had a look at different drives but not sure which ones to go for (there seems to be an endless amount!). i don't have much of a problem setting up the the drive itself (a friend can open the computer up and put it in the right place ok) but he's a little lost like me in terms of which one to get. will i need also to download some converting software?

any thoughts, tips, or help at all is greatly appreciated. ben
:)

how much you can fit on a disk depends how small and neat your writing is

Go to a shop that sells dvd writers (or rewriters) and tell the man that you want to purchase one.

The file format is irrelevant as it's software that converts to avi etc, not the writer. The writer will just burn whatever format you want you should be able to pick one up for about £30. The software is freely available over the net.

To be honest they're all much of a muchness, it just depends how much money you've got to spend i.e a £100 is likely to be better than a £30 one. Look at some online reviews and find out what the techies recommend. Unless you're planning on going into the pirate dvd business, I doubt you'll notice much difference between any of them.

go to a local computer fair you should be able to pick up a pioneer 16x dual layer writer for around 35 to 40 quid.
been burning dvds for alot of years and always found pioneer to be the best.
if you need any tips on where to get the best quality movies from at best download speeds for free let me know.
