I'm due an upgrade on my PHONE, as the current 2 year contract runs out this week. I got it in the Carphone Warehouse on an Orange contract, and have been perfectly satisfied with the service so I'm happy to stay with Orange.

My question is, when I mince into Brighton on Snatterday to peruse my upgrade options, should I go to:

A - Carphone Warehouse

or

B - the Orange shop ?

Or doesn't it matter ? I've had nowt through the post or anything, which mildly surprised me. Anyhoo, over to YOU

(I told you it was dull, but you're here now so hey, thanks for listening).

Mrs V is in a similar position, had no notification of the end of contract and she is stuck with an old rubbish phone which is the modern day car equivalent of a Morris Minor for 40 clams a month.. I will watch this thread with interest

Ring up Orange. Say you want to leave. Let them wow you.

I want to touch some phones in a shop though, to make sure I like it. Can't I threaten to leave them in the shop ?

As a general aside, I've got to go out now. All info gratefully received, I'll say thank you later.

Promise.

xx.

So to answer your questions.

It doesn't matter if you choose to go to Carphone Warehouse or the Orange shop itself, but Carphone as a third party seller sometimes offer you "free gifts" such as games consoles etc on selected tariffs and phones (usually the ones they struggle to shift though).

The Carphone in Brighton is pretty much all live phones while the Orange store opposite the mall has just last week gone through a refit of the shop so SHOULD have live handsets too.

If they have not, Orange does have a direct high street presence in Hove ( if this is closer/more suitable for you) down George street. The store is called Everything Everywhere and is an official Orange & T-mobile store as the two networks are now part of the same company (have actually been for the past 3 years). This store has completely live handsets and the advisors in this store are customer advisors rather than sales advisors.

Anyway, on the difference between coming in-store and calling up, you MAY find that using the whole " I'm going to leave" technique can come to fruition but at this present moment in time, both Orange & T-mobile are offering basically market-leading tariffs. O2 and Vodafone in particular are struggling to compete with these and Orange know this so may be less inclined to "meet your demands" of discount to line-rental. But it really depends on how much you are paying a month, how much you want to pay and of course which handset you're after.

Not Luton! Thank God
The other option is to ditch the idea of a contract and go down the giff gaff route 10 pound a month for 250 mins 200 texts and unlimited data.

Then buy a quality second hand phone. I picked up a mint quality 3GS for my wife for £100 quid. Over the course of a 24 month contract she will be 100 quid better off and have a much better phone

You actually get UNLIMITED texts as well as the UNLIMITED data with your £10 monthly top up.

Excellent value.

BUT if you do want the flashy handset without an upfront cost, then as has been suggested already, you need to call up Orange and threaten to leave. Have a play in the shop first so when they do try and tempt you with their "please stay" offers you can tell them you'd only consider staying for one of them nice Galaxy S3 phones, or whatever you fancy.

Try a phone and make up some Bollocks as to why you can't buy on the spot. Let call orange and threaten to leave. They'll eventually offer you a better deal.

Having recently changed my phone, my recommendation is to work out what phone it is you want then go online and find the best deal. Orange will almost certainly be unable to get anywhere close to it. I was with orange and they quoted me £37 a month for the phone i wanted. Got it on 02 through tesco for £22 pound a month, most suppliers £25 - £28 for the same sort of contract. Orange's best offer once i said i was going to leave was £28.

I would have a shop around to see what the competition is and what phone you want. Then call orange. See if they can match or better what you want. If not, ask for your PAC code (port authorisation code which allows you to take your number to a different network). What you should find is their retention team should call you up and try and keep you as a customer. Usually this involves better deals and tariffs then what you get offered normally. If they don't, and you don't use your PAC code you should just carry on using your current phone and tariff.
I told my dad to try this with Voda. He ended up getting the galaxy s3, for free , with unlimited text and minutes and 2gb download for about £30 a month. He wasn't even offered that on a business tariff.
Call their bluff! They make loads of money anyway!!!

Have you thought about O2?

Excellent reliability and coverage, never goes down.....oh.

FFS

Sent by the power of Wi-Fi as O2 are STILL pissing about trying to resurrect the crashed network, after ten hours.
