Do you think any of them go home and lose any sleep over decisions like the Bournemouth penalty when they watch them back, or do they just chalk it up as a bad day at the office, move on and not give a second thought to the outraged thousands and potential impact on that club? The accumulated loss of points through officiating balls-ups could cost promotion and thus loss of significant revenue through gate receipts, merchandise, decent players who decide to move on as a result etc. and yes there is an issue of 'get over it, these things even themselves out throughout the season' but the fact there seems to be absolutely no accountability, for what, at the end of the day could have a serious impact on the business of being a football club does irk somewhat.

Right, I'm over it now. Thanks for the read.

I think some genuinely hold their hands up after a cock up and apologise to managers and make that public. Whether yesterday's assistant arsehole will bother who knows...

They must, like us all, want to do a good job and nobody wants to be shown up as a fool. having that howler shown on TV is bound to haunt them, or it bloody well should. I really don't know what they could do to try and save some face.

I wonder what would have happened if somebody had lept from the north with one of those iphones and showed the lino the TV pics before the pen was taken? (Apart from the obvious being pounced on by stewards and banned for life).

I'd imagine that lino is bricking himself. Every ref & their assistants has their performance reviewed & much like in any line of work if you're not doing the job right you'll either get sacked or downgraded.

I can't see any of them getting struck off (unfortunatly) but after a howler like that i reckon the lino will be downgraded for a game or two.

Although it wouldn't make any difference to the result, it'd be nice if the officials took a good look at the match they officiated on Saturday, realised they were appalling and then had the decency to apologise to the club / fans

This is a difficult question isn't it, asking if a referee has a conscience and worries about the mistakes they have made...a bit like asking if an executioner has sleepless nights thinking about all the lives they have brought to an abrupt end.

But the executioner was just carrying out a sentance ordained by the judgement of others.

Of the ref's I've met (local level) all seem to have that seige mentality and won't accept they have done wrong.

At the recent Forest Green versus Eastbourne game the referee had a bit of a shocker...booked a player for being run into by an opponent, it definitely wasn't a deliberate obstruction, sadly it was his second yellow so he was sent off...then came a booking for a handball that wasn't, the ball hit the player on the thigh, nowhere near his hand...he then didn't book a player for deliberate handball in the box, but did give a penalty. After the game he admitted in the bar that he had made a few howlers, which was refreshing, but I am at a loss to understand why he was laughing when Eastbourne scored their winner with the last kick of the game (in the seventh minute of five minutes of injury time)...at least he was man enough to admit to his mistakes, but by then the damage was done!

Blame the press/media for that.

They are going to be less forthcoming untill the so called experts/managers/journos slate them wrongly (yesterday aside)

Its going to get to a point where we run out of refs or they go on strike.

Some do, some don't.

I ask the question every day about the people making decions on tenders etc that my comapny and I work on and the decions people make.

The problem is they don't hardly ever make themselves accountable to their decions or explain the process at which they arrived at their decions.

Referees seem to work in a Masonic-style society.Plus they are NEVER wrong whatever the evidence shows.

As to apologies, they're more like another famous group that advocates omerta.

And whatever,results never change,eh?

The Eastbourne Borough game before that he sent off Banks the Eastbourne goalkeeper for catching a ball and the momentum taking him out of his area . Thing is he didnt go out of his area at all , the linesman said he didnt but the cock of a ref standing in the centre circle said he did .
Brighton feel unjust over the ref yesterday but they are ten a penny in the Conference
