I am about to book a short trip to Dubrovnik as a treat for my Birthday in the middle of May.

Any recommendations on where to stay/things to do will be greatfully received.

We stayed at the Grand Villa Argentina (I think that is what it was called). The rooms were pretty basic considering it is supposedly 5 star, but the view from the breakfast terrace of Dubrovnik was superb. It was only a 2 or 3 minute walk from the old town. The Excelsior next door is supposedly very good and frequented by the rich and famous.

The only hotel I remember seeing within the walls was the Pucic Palace (my spelling is almost certainly wrong) but that cost a medium sized fortune. Maybe worth checking out if you have a big budget.

Things to do:
Take a boat trip from the Old Harbour to Cavtat (pronounced savtat) and spend a lazy afternoon there.
Walk round the city walls (take some water).
Take the ferry to Lokrum (the big island just outside the harbour) and go exploring.
Try and find the little doorway through the city wall that leads to a nice little bar looking out over the Adriatic.

I wouldn't bother with a night trip in one of the glass bottomed boats. There really isn't much to see.

We took an organised tour via the Hydrofoil to the Island of Mijet and also did the three island cruise, but these weren't great. We didn't get enough time on Mijet and the three island cruise was too rushed plus the boat was very overcrowded.

Dubrovnik is absolutely beautiful and this was possibly the best holiday I've had.
