Drones and phones in prisons

In yesterdays papers there is concern at the number of phones and amount of drugs being dropped in prisons.

Why can they not bring in a sysytem to bar mobile phone reception in prisons thus making them useless and also a system that would prevent drones operating. Is it the cost involved or is it not possible to carry this out? As a layman it seems so obvious.

It would also not distinguish between prisoners and staff/visitors. For example, I imagine that quite a few visitors would need to order a taxi - how would they be able to do that if mobiles are blocked?

Us a landline that can be located in a visitors area.

Or put the limiters within the walls so that a phone works 50yds away outside. Could they not get co-operation from the phone companies to install limiters or tax them higher to pay for it. What about barring drones?

I have no idea! How on earth did people order taxis or takeaways before mobile phones?

Ohhhh we had a thing called a telephone!

But not in prisons as the people are there as a punishment and to be deprived of everyday amenities.

Come on now and do try to be realistic.
Do the prisons not have landlines in the offices and reception?
Or did the Governor have to go to a phone box outside the prison to speak to the Home office?

As soon as a phone is switched on, triangulation with the three nearest cell masts can pinpoint within a few metres where the phone is.
If it's INSIDE block the number - if it later transpires it was a legitimate number [guard / visitor] can then be unblocked.

We have the technology .....
but can we be arsed?

More to the point, visitors and staff might need to call for help.

Takeaways. The clue is in the name; we used to go (physically, on foot, bicycle or by car) and take them away from the Chinese/Indian/fish and chip shop or whatever. That's what we did before mobile phones.

I'd imagine prison authorities wouldn't be too happy about visitors wondering into the governor's office
How did they do it pre mobile phones in the 60s?
We used to have these things called telephone boxes which were very handy - try to find a working one now.

I actually had this very problem in Crowborough: I needed to order a cab but there's no mobile signal in the entire town and the only phone box I found was broken. I eventually had to ask the leisure centre to call me a cab. That might be awkward for dozens of visitors all leaving at the same time

The answer to your question is that it can be done easily (technically ) if there's the political will.
