Got a friends 60th birthday in Woodingdean the day before Utd at home on last day of season, so thinking about staying in Brighton for the night. Since the refurb, what is The Downs Hotel like now? Would be very convenient for a party in Woodingdean and footy the next day.

It's our local so I've only frequented the pub, but it's a massive improvement since the refurb.

It would be an awesome place to stay for the football, if decent. I spent my first 5 years in Rottingdean, and the drive up to there, whether heading to Brighton or Lewis, was fab. It always liked like a slightly desiccated licorice allsort.

Newmarket.
I lived uphill from the Downs on the other side of Falmer road just down from the Sunblest bakery.
My 18th birthday "piss up" was held in the function room upstairs in the pub and when some other Woodingdean locals (bigger boys, and uninvited) tried to get in I walked drunkenly down the stairs to ask them to leave, was punched from behind and knocked to the floor, then kicked a few times in the face.

It was quite a long time ago.
It has to be much better now.

I guess Jim F doesn't own it any more hard as nails that boy.
Was the "F" for Farr?

I moved from Woodingdean to Saltdean in the 60's and the "Farr" boys from Woodingdean [The Toby] were acknowledged as the hardest. I recall a Jonny Farr being a nasty piece of work.

Saltdean's top-boy of the time was Bill Williams who had some agro with the Farr's - many a summer playing cricket with Bill in the Barn garden in Saltdean Park - was okay so long as you stayed on the right side of him. I got him out once but self declared it was a no-ball.

I worked behind the bar 87-89ish - My first night at the Downs the landlady was on holiday, and some local's who had been thrown out of the Toby came in around 10.50; wanted loads of drinks, and more past 11; when denied, they started pouring themselves and jumped the bar, getting into a massive bundle with the temp manager.. they fell in the kitchen (knives..) all the top shelf took a burton, pretty scary for a 17 year old who lied his way to job.

Old bill got them, went to Lewes Crown Court, and i was called flagged as a witness, all the while still fibbing about my age, but didnt get called.

The then landlady went to 5 Bells at Chailey and Steve and Tanya who ran the Hare and Hounds took it over, bringing their Harley UltraGlide with them, and the assistant manager (Liz) whose Honda CM125 i borrowed and had an almighty crash on.. She eventually took over the Black Lion in town.

Yes it is sorry for being so vague I think Jimmy went from the Toby to the Admiral Napier (not sure) Then Rottingdean town and The Downs. Yes you didn't want to mess with them but i got on well with them. Love your cricket story.

Blimey that's a name I haven't heard in a long time! Wasn't it the other pub he owned, can't remember the name.
Yes several Toby, Downs I know someone from the Toby went to The Admiral Napier if thats at the bottom of Elm Grove. Jim also had a pub in Rottingdean on the left near the bottom. But i haven't caught up with him for a few years so who knows where he is.

Not stayed in the hotel but visit the Down each matchday as its my local and a bus runs from there to the ground at a cost of £5. .

It's ok, a LOT better than it used to be but probably not as good as some. Does a nice pint of Harvey's and various other beers plus the standard lagers. and few other fancy ones.

There were Everton fans staying there last home game (and they did it last year) and I know a few Brighton fans from afar have stayed as well. last one I spoke to seemed to like it and had been before.

The White Horse in Rottingdean has also been refurbished though not sure if that has completed.

The place is 100% improved since the refurb. It’s my go to place on match days as there is a Seagulls Travel bus that takes you to the ground for £5 return. It’s always the first away from the coach park after the game as long as you get there promptly after the final whistle. To give you an idea, on a 3pm Saturday game I can be back in the pub with a pint before the 5.30 game kicks off ! They have just started trialling 2 runs to / from the ground - first at 1.50 then second around 2.10 (getting there for a 3pm KO).
