... saw him play Macbeth for my O levels in the 80s, and I think he was in a much older Doctor Who...

Most memorable line still has to be 'Don't tell him Pike!'... or possibly (to Mainwaring...

'I am making notes, captain, and your name will go on ze list. ...

A fine actor, deserves to be remembered for more than the U Boat commander and for being married to Gladys Pugh.

He went to the same school as my mum (and about the same time), sadly she has no racy anecdotes of his past.

I think he would be a bit disappointed if that was all he was remembered for!

Exactly. One of my earliest memories as a kid of a 'scary' tv character was his role as Magua the leader of the Huron Indians in an adaptation of the classic 'Last of The Mohicans'.

Think he was married to Ruth Madoc of Hi De Hi.

Let's hope not, he didn't say it.

Nor did he say ''don't tell him your name Pike'' though some still think he did!

Let's hope not, he didn't say it.

Good actor with a lovely Welsh voice.
Saw him a few years back in Holly and the Ivy at the Connaught Theatre in Worthing.
On telly,he was excellent as LLoyd George and also as a detective in the slightly quirky A Mind to Kill.

R.I.P.
