Dons set for sell-out

Wimbledon are ready for action at Milton Keynes
Wimbledon are hopeful the first match at their new Milton Keynes home will be a sell-out.
Burnley are the visitors on Saturday and club officials believe they are poised to play in front of a 9,000 capacity crowd.

A Wimbledon spokesman said: "Tickets are selling very well and it looks as though it could be a sell-out."

And Wimbledon manager Stuart Murdoch said: "To be expecting so many for the game is absolutely magnificent for a club without a win in eight games.

"It's testament to the desire of the Milton Keynes people to see football. They have waited a long time for this."

Former Wimbledon star Robbie Earle believes the new start at Milton Keynes can be the catalyst for a new "Crazy Gang" spirit at the club.

He said: "Now they are in Milton Keynes the team can start to build their own spirit, in the way we had with the Crazy Gang. That was part of the club's history and it will not be forgotten."

Fans demand Dons name change
But representatives of the Wimbledon Independent Supporters' Association (WISA) have renewed their criticisms of the move and called on the club to change its name.

"It's absurd and insulting to Wimbledon fans to see a team from London playing in Buckinghamshire," said WISA chief Nicole Hammond.

"It's a sad day for Wimbledon supporters, and a sad day for English football."

B.R. - how does Wimbledon leaving Selhurst impact Palace? Presumably they were paying quite a substantial 'rent' that Palace will have been used to over the past few years?

Milton Keynes has been a graveyard for football.

There have been a number of clubs in the area who've tried to make a go of it, but they've all gone out of business - the last being Milton Keynes City during the summer - due to lack of interest.

Franchise/MK may well go the same way.

Palace won't be affected. It's Ron Noades that gets the rent, and he has nothing to do with them anymore.

Are you sure? I know Jordan was moaning about the loss in money pre season!

Got to say, if I lived in MK I would be very depressed. Sorry, if I lived there and I had lossely followed a team, say Reading or Oxford then I would follow Wimbledon. You would have at long last a chance to see your 'local' team no matter what the circumstances are for them being there.

I was told by a WFC fan they averaged 15,000 in their last season in the Premiership, which if not great, was more than respectable.

It's crap for Koppel to say they can't survive on gates of 4000, when probably half of the football league does just that. Teams like Colchester, Port Vale and Bournemouth in the second division do, and the likes of Macclesfield get by on 1400.

Fingers crossed they get thrashed by Burnley and the plastic "fans" of MK lose interest. They have no right to the name or the heritage of WFC.

Ceefax in London have announced they're not covering their results in the local section anymore, and instead have added AFC to their pages.

I work with someone from Milton Keynes, and they said that the local paper was printing songs for the game for all the locals to sing. The match is sold out, he said.
