Donatello's

Barrel of Fun

Abort, retry, fail
Oh, that does ring a bell now.

Indeed I did, CP.

They started with Topolino and then extended to Pinnochio and Donatello. Sold off Topolino to a Brighton fan who won the lottery, which then moved and morphed into Topolino Duo. Then set up Fat Leo and Fratelli. I think you are right and they do own a restaurant each. They certainly have a pizza named after them.

DON'T got there Frutos. The last 3 times I've been there I've had:

-rude waiters
-cold food
-poor quality food
- Up to 1 1/2 hour wait just for starters

It's a shame because 5 - 10 years ago it was excellent; and the head waiter seems a really decent chap. In the nearby vacinity I would highly recommend:

Fratelli's: Part of the same group, very slightly more expensive food but far superior in quality, much more space in the restaurant, better serice, etc. They also change the menu regularly wheras Donatello's NEVER changes.

Al Forno's: For a rustic but very good value Italian meal

I'd also highly recommend, although a bit further away, Beenies on London Road or its sister restaurant Frankie and Johnie's in Hove. I'd say the tastiest and best value pizzas in Brighton.

Personally I would also avoid Pablo's / Picasso's, largely because I had a lasagne there that was more like a soup!

Sounds like that could be an option then, cheers Notters. :)

It's next to Rounder Records in Brighton square, in case you didn't know... I lurv the Mussel and Carpacio starters. My favourite think about this place, particularly as someone with a fairly small appetite, is that they do all of their pastas in starter or main size portions, so I tend to get a starter, a starter-sized pasta, and still have room for dessert!

I sat outside with a friend visiting from Germany, and we had lunch there - small-sized pizzas and coffees.

The coffee was very decent, the pizza-dough quite good, and flavour excellent. VERY low priced lunch deals there. The view was pleasant, and a short stroll to the Laine square/record shop/pubs. I imagine it's not a bad plan to start an evening there before heading for the clubs and pubs.

They told us it would take a while to get served because they were busy, but it wasn't too bad at all.

Thumbsup for a lower-end restaurant.
(only thing; one I didn't see on the menu was angel-hair pasta or capellini, and I personally don't care for 'big' spaghetti)

Plus you can sit at the table where Mark McGhee was sacked, a must for an DIE HARD Albion fan.

Glad I've never been there now. Kind of like sitting in ground zero I imagine. Two of the biggest catastrophies in recent times.

Donatello's, I was there Friday and as said already if you know what to expect then you won't be disappointed just dont expect to see Gary Rhodes coming out of the kitchen.

I can recommend the rolled Pizza!!

I thought Raffaelo (who used to run Rafaellos place, owned by his mum) took over donatello. dunno if he still does though.

I would say its 50/50 depending on who you have with you, I believe you get a better reception if you are with Kids or you are tourists. But other times it is just sh*t. I might have recommended piccolos near ship street. But Its got personally more mediocre. might be good for you though.

donatellos is a shit cheap excuse for an italian restaurant. avoid it like you'd avoid a needle hanging out of a black man's arm who is collapsed on a street corner in sierra leone

I've just met a bird, so I'm going to take her there next week. If that the case with STH getting discount.

What happened to the other girl you were with? Dana?

Also Kev, taking someone on a date to somewhere just because you get discount there is not exactly romantic.
