Dog Lovers - How long did your Dog live for ?

people who don't have dogs will never understand the companionship they can give you.
I have 2 staffs, a 4 year old and an old boy of 13.
I shall be in bits when he goes.
I opened this thread because I love dogs more than I love most people.
Some people's posts on here have proper brought me down.
Just called the old boy up for a cuddle

I agree. Call me sad but my old Dog has been the most important thing in my life and has never walked away or let me down, like a lot of Humans have.

When I was younger I had a wonderful Boxer called Hennessy, who was completely bonkers, had huge feet and drooled for Britain. I adored the mad thing.

Then, two days before Christmas he was hit by a car and killed - I was devastated. I swore then that I would never have a pet again and that still stands.

So anyone that has a dog, treasure the moment and treasure the love for theirs is unconditional. After all these years I still miss my mad mutt.

I have always wanted a dog and am just in the process of buying our first home.

Some of the stories on here are making me think twice - you experience enough sad moments in life without voluntarily adding more!

Then you're missing the point of the stories.

The reason they are so heart breaking is because of what happened in the previous +10 years.

That time has been spent with a companion who has 'loved' you unconditionally, has been with you through the good times and the bad, has been the funniest comedy genius, as well as a pain in the google.

I am bathing his foot with epsom salts and warm water and then drying it. He looks into my eyes, even though it hurts with trust knowing I am doing the best by him. Ever had a Golden Retreiver with their big brown eyes look at you with trust ? Well I can tell you, it is a moment.

Even when Harry goes, and he will soon I would not change a thing and I know I did the very best by him. So many good times, I don't know where to start.

I had a white Boxer, he was a month away from turning 13 last October, but the last few months he started to have occasional fits, he'd be fine after, but one night he had so many, it was horrible. So we had to take him to the vets the following morning and he had to be put to sleep.

I got to take him for a walk on our park just a week before, (same place I first took him when he was 6 weeks old on his first outing) and for some reason it kind of gave me comfort that I was the last one to take him there, although in his old age/illness he feared anything that moved which was so far from his character, where I'd usually have to keep a mile away from anyway as he was very protective.

He was such a crazy thing, but his love was infectious. You could come home miserable and him wagging his whole body and jumping in excitement was a great feeling. Nearly 13 was a decent age for a white Boxer as they are unfortunatley prone to all kinds of illnesses, but it doesn't make it easier when they go.

I have since moved into a rented flat, where animals aren't allowed, but to be honest I think it will be a few years untill I get another anyway, as although it's a negative outlook, the loss and realisation it will happen again is still a little raw.

My heart goes out to you - no doubt he's happily gnawing on a bone, and drooling as Boxers do!, in doggie heaven.

I remember Harry at 4 taking a whole Magnum off me with the stick and swallowing it whole. Must have come out the other end I guess. When I was going through some tough times he got his arse off the sofa and put his head on my lap. Dogs know. They just know.

That they do US, they certainly do.

When my father died, someone Holly only met two or three times she knew I was in pain. She laid on my feet every time I sat down, something she'd never done before, and positioned herself look at me all the time, right in the eyes.

I am a Golden Retreiver owner and he has given me so much love and affection it is untrue. He is not well and nearly 15 now. I know one day, maybe soon the inevitable will happen and it will be devastating. How long did your Dog live for and what breed ? No one can ever underestimate the love between a Man and His faithful Dog.

I also had a Lurcher that made it to 16.

Good luck, your knowing still cannot prepare or console, and you and I know it.

My recent loss was 14, lab mix. She was the most gentle and pleasing soul.

My first I raised from a little squirt - he became king of my castle and lived to 11.5.
It devastated me to lose him (heart failure), but I will eventually see him again as real as ever.
A partner who will happily be with you every minute dedicated to you - the gift that keeps on giving.

Dogs are the greatest of nature's gifts to man.

Sheebo sums it up well. She broke my heart when she had to go, but in order to have broken it she first filled it with love.

Thanks for those kind words - I now have grandchildren, so maybe . . .maybe when the time is right I will follow your advice.

Our dachshund was 14 when his kidneys failed and we had to call the vet for the dreaded injection.

But our jack russell was 17 until she succumbed to a tumour. Judging by what people have posted they seemed to long-lived.

My kids are pestering for a dog and might give in and get a JR - they're great dogs

I also had a Lurcher that made it to 16.

I also had a Golden Retriever 'who' was the most wonderful dog imaginable and, after almost living at the vet, sadly died at 5/6 years, reason unknown but probably ate poison on the downs. Totally gutted !
