Taking it off freeview is a very odd move in my opinion. There's not going to be anyone, anywhere, who goes and gets sky JUST so they can watch sky sports news, but with it on freeview it was basically a constant advert for what you could get on the sky sports package which I'm sure convinced a fair few people to subscribe.

Agree with the HD comment to some extent but that's the way the world is going and in 10 years time the kids will probably view non-HD the same way we think of black and white telly.

Not sure about 10 years time... I got HD last week and already despise anything that is not broadcast in High Definition, especially sport

We'll be having this conversation in years to come when HD becomes the new SD.

The current HD still looks rubbish with movement. I'll continue to underwhelmed until they increase the frame rate.

Important thing to bear in the mind is the massive stockpile of SD programmes that make up 99% of the ouput.

Until they've managed to stock pile enough HD stuff worth repeating (can you imagine a sitcom made in the last few years actually worth repeating...) you'll be stuck with SD stuff FOR YEARS.

poppycock, HD picture quality on SKY is tremendous, I sometime catch my self watch shows on the the quality of the picture rather than the content !!!

I must admit that HD quality has somewhat diminished over the 4 yrs that I have had it.

For example BBC HD started broadcasting at 22mbps back then and was pretty fantastic. Now it averages around 16mbps, still looks good, but not as good.

I think SKY have pulled the same trick

One channel that is consistently good in HD is Eurosport HD.

What will come after HD then?

Is that the pinnacle of television?

Well they are trying to push 3D!

But Japan has Super HD which I think it 4 times the definition of our HD.

Super Hi-Vision (also known as 4320p, 8K, Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV), and Ultra High Definition Video (UHDV)) is an experimental digital video format, currently proposed by NHK of Japan and the BBC.[1] Quad Full High Definition, also referred to as Quad HD, is not UHDTV and represents an intermediate format mid-way between HDTV and UHDTV.

3D is on the way...
Sky are launching their 3D channel with the Ryder Cup.
If you have a moment, nip into Curry's etc, and take a look at the 3D televisions .Put the glasses on and be amazed !!

3D a bit of gimic in my opinion. It's not new - it's been around for ages (in the cinema) and time will tell whether it's grabs the attention of the public on it's 3rd or 4th chance.

May well work with golf though

The Ultra High Definition formats do look good, but then again it really depends on what the programme is about.

I've really been a fan of the theatre since I struggle to suspend my belief watching a bunch of thesps running around on a raised platform in the same room.

I'm worried that as TV gets higher and higher definition it will start to resemble a bunch of thesps running around in a plastic box.

Good for you, but it isn't poppy cock.

It doesn't handle movement very well at all. If you ever get the opportunity to see something at a much higher frame rate (in HD) you'd agree.
