Yes they could. Trouble is of course private doctors cost a hell of a lot more than NHS ones. The last private doctor I saw charged me at a rate that worked out about £200 per hour!

Private doctors are usually just the same ones you would see in the NHS. The difference is, you jump the queue.

It's additional money. As hospital Doctors ( don't confuse them with GP's) They are contracted to the NHS for 7 sessions or 3.5 days a week.
Which on the face of it leaves them 3.5 days to work in Private Practice. I don't know any that do though.

Do me a favour, they received a massive, over double in some cases, pay increase under the new contracts handed out by Labour giving most GP's a salary in excess of £120 000. They were no longer expected to work "out of hours" so most surgeries resort to an emergency service during this time. The GP's now hardly ever make a diagnoses but refer anything slightly suspect to a consultant. They basically poke and prod their patients for 8 hours a day, at most, give out prescriptions to many who don't need them, refer any that may be ill and take home a handsome salary and a golden pension. GP's under pressure, my arse.

is the correct answer, GP's that is, the doctors in hospitals seem to be under some pressure, having said that it is their career choice.

Yes I know they are. But why do you think they work privately, it because they earn more money than the NHS!

The question was why don't the Government out-source to private doctors, as if they're somehow different. So not quite sure what you're getting at. I'm sure the Government would love all doctors to be private and paid for by insurance so they could cut income tax, win votes and wash their hands of the NHS. Thankfully, they won't get away with it.

Presumably, being aware of the action being taken, you took the prudent step of ringing the hospital yesterday to double check?

As far as I'm aware, the doctors aren't on strike and should be at work. They are taking industrial action, in effect a go slow.

I knew nothing about the action until I heard it on the news at 6 last night..

Anyway arrived at the hospital in good time there should have been 3 drs on duty in Orthopaedic but there were only 2...the only one on strike was the Polish guy.
in and out within an hour....all in all no problems.

but a question.....why is there an Army medic working in the hospital ( a female major) ? anyone know?

The Doctors of all three services are trained and work in NHS Hospitals. Even when there were service Hospitals as Jnr. Doctors they spent time in NHS Hospitals, to gain experience in all skills, and more so when it came time to specialise. There are now 5 or 6 Hospitals around the country that have integrated departments which are staffed by military personnel.
