By which I mean red wines above say £9.00?

I'm interested in attitudes to screwcaps versus corks...

I wouldn't generally spend £9 on a bottle of wine unless it was in a restaurant although I do tend to bring most my wine back from my regular visits to France. There you can pick a really decent bottle for around 4 Euros. I'm not bothered about screwtop v cork but it is noticeable that virtually all French wines use corks.

Yes. My average bottle price is around £10, with £25 being my (rare) top end. As screw tops are fairly new, they only top young wines. As good wines improve with age it is still hard to say if screw tops will allow a good wine to develop in the way that natural cork does. So your question cannot really be answered yet, though those with a more scientific mind would go into detail on airflow through the cork not being replicated in a 100% airtight screw top.

Tend to judge a (red) wine by reviews/awards etc..
A quick look at the weekend papers will always yield some recommendations.

Some of the cheaper (especially when discounted on promotion) ones still have Decanter Magazine Gold/Silver/Bronze award stickers on them.

Plus decanting into a 250 ml or 500 ml carafe first to let it breathe will also help.

CORRECTION - with the latest Government health guidelines, a 175 ml glass/carafe is the largest size allowable.....

a little tip for french wines

if it's half decent it should have Recoultant on top of the label

if it just has numbers, then it's basically table wine

I would never buy a bottle of red from a supermarket for more than £9 although the only exception to this would be a good bottle of Rioja.

There's no difference between cork and screwtops and that's been chemically proven

Joined Laithwaites for their introductory offer last year, worked out around £50 (half price) for 12 really nice wines. They come some with corks, some with screwtops. Reading the magazines, there isn't really much in it other than a screw top won't be corked (pretty obvious really). There is still some stigma to the caps but as already mentioned it should be allowed to breathe before quaffing anyway.

Now I keep cancelling my subscription and signing up family members to redo the introductory offers. Well worth it!

I'm hoping that the fact that it is not written on top of the 2 bottles of Rothschild grand cru classe means that it is very decent, not half decent, or table wine.

Talking about the stopper is missing the point of wine.
