As long as it needs to. "It was a long time ago" is no defence.

different laws and behavior accepted in the past.

i suspect Johnson cant recall because it something that was normal, that with a modern view seems unacceptable. the claim of groping in 2019 is the more relevent.

I'd question how normal or acceptable it was in 2003 for a 65 year old man of authority to do this to a 33 year old woman considered his junior. Acceptable or normal to those who behaved like that perhaps (if the allegations are true) but not socially or morally.

It can take victims years to pluck up the courage to come forward when abused, especially when the abuser has power. To decide that racism, sexual harassment or any other crime shouldn’t matter because it took the victim a decade to pluck up the courage to open up seems pretty abhorrent to me.

Victim? A slapped bottom nearly 20 years ago, i'm sure she's over it.

This reminds me, I once had my bum pinched in a nightclub in 2007. I must find out who my abuser was so i can press charges against her. She's probably still walking free.

Stanley Johnson, father of Boris, now being accused of smacking a female MP's bottom at the 2003 Party Conference.

Funnily enough he has no recollection of the incident, but in mitigation he's in his 80's.

The same as this 'alleged' conversation at Yorkshire 12 years ago, which looks set to destroy Michael Vaughan's career and reputation.

How far back is far enough?

If he was 80 when he did it he is an old fool but this means he was probably in his 60s so he knew what he was doing.

When will these rich people realise it isn't the 1800s anymore and they can't treat other people like their playthings?

If people Savile and Bennell are protected by such a legislation then I’d be very much opposed.

So which crimes are no longer illegal after a certain period? Should we also close down any investigations into unsolved murders prior to 2003?

Because the Statue of Limitations hasn't yet passed of course.

Sorry, I still can’t quite fathom why these boffins are calling the proposed statue of Boris’ Dad the ‘Statue of Limitations’?

Should Boris’ Dad’s limitations really be reduced to his enthusiasm for bottom squeezing random women and men at party conferences in the 80’s or are there more limitations we’ve not heard about (fathering by far the worst PM in living memory should be one of them).

Finally, I’ve not even seen where this supposed statue is proposed to be positioned. I’m certainly not comfortable with it being erected in Brighton and would probably take time off work to protest.

Only the " 'ALLEGED' " ones, i.e. jovial arse slapping, being a bit racist or tweeting pictures of your beefy knob.

Somewhere on the end of the breakwater at Brighton Marina would be good, save us an awful lot of effort when the time comes for it to go splash

No, it's a bad idea.

Crimes need to be able to be proven in court no matter how long ago the charged offence occurred - but the offence must have been one in Law at the time.

Reputational damage is different and that is a public perception - so can't be limited by law anyway.

Can never say what Johnson did was anything other than stupid but it does leave me with a bit of concern about motive on some of this.

Its a long time to wait and what does the "victim" get out of it at the end? If its a Jimmy Saville or Yorkshire CCC issue where there were massive institutional failings then there is every justification but i do worry some of this is just a bit bandwagon.

If you took this to the nth degree, someone could find fault with something any of us may have done which could be judged as unacceptable in modern society.

Not condoning Johnson's behaviour in any way btw.....
