Nadine Dorries has basically called the women who accused Johnson of groping them, liars, because he never groped her.

I was never killed by Jack the Ripper , it doesn’t mean he never killed anyone.

Thick as a whale meat sandwich.

This woman is in the cabinet, truely incredible performance last week when facing questions about C4. Thick as pig shit.

English, or more accurately language, is a difficult thing to argue about. For instance English speaking Ppf has spelt the English word (or more correctly French) naive, incorrectly.

The question may be whether stereotyping which may be unfair, or gross assumption which is lazy, is racist. Personally I don't necessarily think so, but someone who harbours racist tendencies could easily hide behind such expressions.

As long as it needs to. "It was a long time ago" is no defence.

I disagree, when I was born, in the early sixties the World and what you were taught was very different.

Can someone who is raised a certain way, and sees the same activity all around him or her be guilty of the product they've become? I'm not talking about serious crime here but general social behaviour.

I don't agree. Looking back over some of my old posts in Twitter and Facebook, absolutists would be very confused.

In a couple of posts I describe how much I love London with its fusion of different cultures and languages and I also talk of how I feel multi-culuturism doesn't work in its intended application. I also talk of my love for Leicester- whilst describing it as 'Little Lahore'.

I have a real problem with how folk are so quick to judge these days on a few words. We have a problem with a new liberal form of puritanism.

I read what Vaughan wrote, it's just an opinion to me. In fact, not really an opinion, just a throw away comment. I happen to, as said above, love the international feel of London. It's obviously not for everyone. The French say the same about us in some of the Dordogne villages.

Vaughan's comment is a bit like Farage's re: the underground but much more an observation. Either way, I just shrugged my shoulders and thought 'not my view of it'

Fact, opinion or throwaway comment – why is it even so much of an issue for him to tweet about it? He's saying he'll need to learn another language – why's that?

I don't think Vaughan was either stereotyping or making assumptions. From what I read into it, he had actually been to London and heard people speaking languages which aren't English. If you hear someone speaking a foreign language, it is neither stereotyping nor ignorant to say they aren't speaking English. (You might think it is something that shouldn't be mentioned, but that's a different matter.)

Incidentally, naive is a perfectly good, English word. Just because a word has French origins does not mean that it cannot be anglicized. Immigration works for language as it does for people.

I am not passing judgement on Vaughan, merely making my opinion known. I don't really disagree with what you said either.

On 'naive' I understand it's a perfectly good English word and has been for ages. I know much of the origins and makeup of English, it's fondly called a '*******' tongue for a good reason.

Michael Vaughan was brought up in Greater Manchester and Sheffield, both of which would have had sizeable immigrant communities when he was growing up. I would have thought he would be use to walking down the street and hearing non-English spoken. When he did the Tweet it was in 2010 he was launching a media career.

As a minimum he really should have known better but it looks like someone used to saying such things and not getting picked up on it, which suggests fairly sizeable cultural problems in cricket.

I thought it was silly comment to make. But it's not something I'd make an issue of. I would ask him what he meant by it though. Always the first port of call. But. as I said, there is an absolutist form of liberal puritanism in our society that worries me at present. And I would certainly be described as a full on liberal lovey. I'm just not into this piety porn that seems to be the agenda. Folk should chat a bit more and resolve differing views.

An example is my belief that muti-culturalism doesn't work. On the face of it that sounds a bit UKIPy and full on piety points scorers would describe it as racist. Except that it's a point froma deeper concern about a society that seems to exist, pretty well generally, with a plural form of mono-culturalism.

Culture is an inherited concept really. Quite a dangerous and restrictive one. So that's a view from the other end of the scale. That'll confuse anyone who wants to pigeon hole my view of things.
