On a long train journey back from the north yesterday, and after a considerable amount of beers, we drew up a list of the 92 clubs and planted them in the division we think they belong in.
Not sure about Derby & Forest in the 1st Division, Wolves probably should be in there.
Oxford in the second, surely 4th
Millwall in the 3rd?, maybe a swap with us?
Yes, you're right of course. And this was the cause of much debate. Initially, Huddersfield were in there instead of Brighton. But I changed it back when nobody was looking. Well, they had just beaten us *shakes fist*
Generally have to agree with most of those in the top three divisions, However I think you need some 're-election' for league 2 to look right.
So out with Morecombe, Macclesfield, MK Dons, Stevenage & D+R and in with Luton, Wrexham, Mansfield, Grimsby and Newport County (the sleeping giants of European football).
I'm sure I've seen on here a league table of results and attendances since the start of football and we're Div 3 in both. It's our natural place. Hopefully we can change that in the coming years
An interesting way to spend the journey time home. The drinking I mean.
A lot of disagreements with your list.As has been said, the Albion's history is predominantly 3rd division, but obviously you took into account historical crowd sizes and catchment areas, and likely future developments, probably about the time of the 6th or 7th tinny.
Our average position out of the 92 clubs at the end of the season within the league system since four divisions were introduced (1958) is 50th. Currently, that equates to 6th in the 3rd division/League One, ie where Colchester currently sit.
Anybody who thinks Coventry are a bigger club than Wolves has never been to the West Midlands. Oxford (Headington United) a division above Millwall.....come off it!
Birmingham City - YoYo club between top flight and 2nd division, can't see them going as low as the 3rd.
Bolton Wanderers - As above
Fulham - Should always be enough promoted clubs each season to stop them going down, at least until AlFayed pops his clogs
Stoke City - Potential YoYos between premiership and Championship
West Bromwich Albion - the YoYo experts, safe in the top flight until their manager gets poached.
Queens Park Rangers - Straight up, might just scrape it in premiership as long as Warnock is there, more likely to be 1 season wanders in Premier.
Watford - Not good enough for top flight, Championship is their mark
Leicester City - As above
Norwich City - As Above
Portsmouth - Won't get to those premier dizzy heights again unless they get seriously wealthy owners and a new ground, Championship mid table at best for years to come.
Preston North End - League 1 at best.
Burnley - Won't get premiership again, Championship at best.
Reading - Championship, need a rich chairman and a better manager to get back to premiership.
Notts County - League 1 or 2.
Brighton and Hove Albion - Honestly? If we keep the chairman, manager and two thirds fill Falmer, in with a punchers chance of premiership in 3 years, Equally, knowing us, we could be in Division 4 in 2 years time when Gus gets poached or leaves, all the players piss off and Tony Bloom has a big loss at the poker table (Hey, c'mon pessimism is my right after watching the albion for 34 years!)
Crystal Palace - Its their turn for a few years of struggle, Championship or maybe even league 1 for the next few seasons. Need richer owners and a new ground which isn't going to happen for the forseeable.
Sheffield United - Championship at best
Hull City - League 1 or 2. Won't get back to premiership again.
Oxford United - league 2/Conference.
Charlton Athletic - League 1
Wolverhampton Wanderers - YoYo's
Cardiff City - Championship, maybe 1 season in premiership, not sure they have the financial clout to quite make it.
Swansea City - Championship or lower, can't help thinking their bubble will burst over next few seasons.
