Reading my Dad's Gulls Eye from 1992, they managed to get 1500 votes for Jonny Byrne as player of the year, but the club gave it to Chivers who had got less than 200 votes instead.

If there was another mass vote, for Dixon this time, who would come second?

I reckon Whing.

The 'protest' vote back then was for Byrne's sale to Sunderland (and therefore a protest against the club's perceived lack of ambition), rather than for any assumed lack of effort from the players.

Of course, we didn't realise how much doo-doo the club was in at the time.

I have no recollection of this and don't understand it either. Why wouldn't the club want to give it to Byrne if he was the most popular player (and he was a really popular player for us).

That can't be right. Mark Gall was the player of the season in 1991/1992, the season that Byrne was sold.

And why couldn't Byrne win it? He did play for us that season

Byrne DID win the vote. But the club - Barry Lloyd - decided to give it to Gall instead.

But that's not what the original post said - that said that the award was given to Chivers. That's what's making me all confused.

Whether it was Gall or Chivers, the point is Byrne won the poll, but Barry Lloyd chose not to give it to him, because he wasn't a Brighton player by then.

The interesting question to me is do they have to be a Brighton player to win this? I'm sure McShane was no longer playing for us when he won (and of course, unlike Byrne, he never was a Brighton player).

The even more interesting thing was why Barry Lloyd should feel so inclined to interfere with the result.

The ONLY thing I could think of in slight mitigation was the it was acknowledged by almost everyone at the time that it was a protest vote, bearing in mind Byrne had only played a dozen or so games for Brighton that season.

Ah right, fair enough.

Well I still think a protest vote is the way to go. Dixon would be the biggest joke obviously as hasn't played, but as DOUG seems to be surprisingly popular why don't we all vote for him?

Loft does seem a good protest vote. He played well against Man City and was promptly dropped. Also, he is a good cult hero.
