I'm a 3rd year student currently researching the affect commercialisation has had on both clubs and fans. If anyone could take 2 minutes to fill in this online questionnaire it would be greatly appreciated. It's completely anonymous, just click on the link below.

Thanks for any help.

I've done it but, just a tip, I'd spell 'effect' correctly before handing the dissertation in

Completed. Worth noting when writing up that you made an error when setting the age bands of including x9 twice. I am 59. Which box should I tick? Good luck.

The most curious thing..
Its a bit basic and doesn't seem to lead anywhere. It also feels skewed that premier league = commercialisation = exploitation.

Is your hypothesis that the premier league is a good or bad thing?

Football has always been a commercial business, even before the premier league, and fans have always been exploited. However the prices are far higher, although I don't know how much this is a result of inflation.

Sorry mate, but you are going to fail your dissertation if you publish results from that survey! You need to rephrase virtually every question to stop them being leading. You have a negative-led questions (5) next to positive-led question (6) and you are demonstrating that you have already made up your mind as to the answer.

You need clarity regarding each question...
3. Yes I have attended more matches (though less premier league matches - is this what you actually meant)
4. Yes, in the 2 seconds it took me to read this question, I have still attended more matches (but less PL ones)!

As a third year doing their dissertation you really should understand how to compose a survey which has no bias and if you don't then you should be learning pretty damn quick.

I've completed this for you mate, but would be happier completing one that was structured properly and gave valid results for your work.

EDIT: BTW if you want help, let me know, I have degrees in Maths and Psychology and although I haven't done this sort of thing in a long time I'll spare you 20mins if you want.

Completed - agree with others, the entire set of questions is based on pre and post 1992 football attendance - I'd guess a fair few of the readership on here never saw a game of footie pre '92

I'd suggest your work needs to consider costs of running a football club and how they have used commercial opportunities to try and boost income. e.g. when did you first buy club merchandise and how old were you? How much do you spend on merchandise and is this more / less / same than x years ago.

Ground share is a commerical concept that is used more now Q/ Have you attended a football stadium for anything other than a football match? If yes, what was the event?

Nice offer. Can't help but think OP has left this a bit late, collecting data with a fairly shoddy survey and we're in mid-March. Good luck nonetheless.

Also when you ask if it increased my attendance, do you mean to any game? Just Premier League? Football league? Non-league inclusive?

Came out 75% greek:facepalm:
You should get a job with Brighton council, you have the knack of leading the responses of surveys???

If it is not too late perhaps a more interesting question would be "what has been the effect on clubs, players, fans and others of the televising of live football" since the start of the Premier League". Television money both actual and potential (worldwide rights etc) is the huge new factor since 1992

Done iot but I have some reservations about it. Several questions ask about "watching" but then lump watching on TV and attending matches into the same category; there's a world of difference between watching Barcelona v Man City on TV and driving hundreds of miles to watch your team.

With two evenings to go i begin my dissertations about 15 years ago. I had borrowed my friend's word processor. I began the first sentence on CAPS LOCK and when noticing thought WELL, I'VE STARTED SO I'LL FINISH. 15 thousand words later were all in capitals. It probably did save time, but undoubtedly looked a bit stupid. My advice it not to do that.

I agree with previous comments and guidance - your questions appear to be leading and suggest a certain bias on your part.

More worryingly, I get the impression that you're viewing the commercialisation of football as a sudden and relatively recent development. It has always been commercialised. Today is merely a point in its evolution. The alienation you seem to be trying to put your finger on is a response to forces such as globalisation rather than commercialisation which has been a constant since the emergence of players wages, transfer fees, entrance fees etc etc.

Just to complicate things: whilst I don't pretend to have researched the subject, it seems to me that there is a prima facie case for saying the alienation of fans is as much triggered by the consequences of the Bosman ruling (see my signature) as anything else.

In short, you are making commercialisation the agent of change ("I'm a 3rd year student currently researching the effect commercialisation has had on both clubs and fans") whereas I would suggest it is the constant. Globalisation, EPL and Bosman are key influences acting on that commercial framework. That's where to look for your causes.

Happy to debate this offline as others have suggested.

Good luck !

PS alienation can also be seen as people failing to adapt to change. No doubt you're covering that in your thesis but a quote always worth trotting out is "The past is a foreign country: they do things differently there" ... opening line of The Go Between by L P Hartley

I appreciate all the feedback. Unfortunately my supervisor has been a bit of an enigma so I was unable to gain his insight into the design/wording of the survey. However, he did say that as this is a relatively small project and I am a novice researcher with limited time, funds etc... try and lead the questions to either prove/disprove the original thesis. Anyway, survey is complete now and once again appreciate you all taking time to answer/give feedback. I will be sure to include the constructive feedback in my limitations and discussion of results.

And well done for taking the feedback on the chin and not getting hissy about it. Unusual in this day and age (and this forum!) for anyone to be so mature over criticism, constructive or otherwise. Good luck mate.
