Execpt the proof that it is, of course: http://www.ramazzini.it/fondazione/newsDetail.asp?id=15

Unless Diet Coke still uses saccharine in the UK, its aspartame here. Saccharine is, of course, extracted from a Group 1 carcinogen, but not used in the quantities required to mark it as such.

What that study proves is that there is a statistically significant link between aspartame and cancer in rats, not humans. The head of the study himself said that more research into the effects of aspartame need to be carried out:

Q: Are new scientific studies about the potential cancer-causing effects of aspartame necessary?

A: Yes, more studies are needed in order to obtain greater precision in quantifying the risk. The current results already demand -- by the competent bodies -- an urgent review of the norms regulating the use and consumption of aspartame in order to protect public health, especially children's health

(From http://www.phmovement.org/en/node/157)

A study on the effects of aspartame carried out by the National Cancer Institute in the USA on humans found no statistically significant link to cancer http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/national/265559_soda05.html

Tough Choice

No Teeth/diseased gums but a clean bill of health
or
Get Cancer but have a great set of pristine knashers

Or "don't drink nasty American crap" or "drink it, and actually brush your teeth". The majority of people who drink Diet Coke are drinking it due to thinking that it'll reduce the effects of the KFC Value Bucket they're eating with it, anyway.

I have never seen it but a quick search has revealed that it contains a "...sexy, charismatic spin-doctor...". So, cheers

That aside, I'm not trying to convince anyone that aspartame definately isn't carcinogenic, merely that there is no definitive proof one way or another at this point in time. One study has found it DOES pose a risk to rats, another has found that it DOESN'T pose a risk to humans and both studies have their failings. Those are the facts and I'd say they're fairly inconclusive at the moment. If you choose to believe otherwise, that's entirely up to you.
