Tim Vickery the South American football expert..said today that we have indeed unearthed another gem, but that throughout his life in football so far, Gomez has had a fitness problem, ie unable to last a full game.... maybe that's why they are easing him in, looked knackered in the 2nd half.
He was on his haunches for a few seconds in the 39th minute when the ball went out for a throw in. He was clearly struggling at that point.

Yeah I listened to that earlier ….maybe that’s down to the league he was playing in….hopefully with a preseason in place fitness won’t be any issue next season….obvs with the Dutchman back on the bench we now have options in that area which in the run in will be invaluable imo

Baleba was similar when he came too. Plays most of the minutes now

I'm not sure how true that is, last season with Inter Miami he played at least 80 mins in 14 of the 15 games he started for them. His other start saw him subbed off after 41 mins with an injury that ruled him out for the next 10 games. With the amount of running modern midfielders do it's no surprise that they can't always last the full game. Considering the last start he made was back in November with Paraguay it's not surprising he's lacking a bit of match fitness either.

Vickery was talking specifically about his games for Paraguay rather than the MSL ‘walking football’ though. Anyway, seems Gomez is very aware of where he’s currently at in terms of fitness….we’ve got enough options for him not to have to get broken

took Ali Mac a good two years to be fully PL ready in terms of required physicality

a year to realise what needed and a year to get there

it also made him a world cup winner too
