Dick Knight's Dilemna Re Manager

Seems to me that whether Coppell stays or goes ( hope he stays but fear he won't ) that Dick's dilemna will still be whether to have someone with experience and a bit of a track record who given a bit of success will clear off to like Horton, Adams, Taylor and probable Coppell as well or go with someone like Wood or Hinshelwood who will be no good.

There seems to be no happy medium - after all if Horton, Adams, Taylor and Coppell had all been crap then Dick would have sacked them as he did Gritt, Wood and Hinshelwood

We are victims of our own success!!! We constantly provide larger clubs with their next manager but can't keep one ourselves.

Horton went for family reasons which you could undestand

Adams always made it known he was ambitious and admits himself if he had known what a mess the Leicester finances were in he would not have gone

Taylor clearly thought we were beneath him and expected to walk into any job he liked - turning down Reading's approach last week or whenever shows he has now learnt the value of loyalty - suspect he wants to prove he can build a club team not inherit teams as he did at Gillingham and BHA

Coppell is the most intelligent of the lot and may well live to regret leaving us if he goes - if Reading do not make the play offs he could well be out of work next summer

BHA could go back up as champions and do a Walsall and stay in Div 1 on small resources until Falmer is built and then "take off"

Reading will expect success much quicker having got to the play offs last year

Also if a Premiership club came calling for Coppell then DK would let him go - Madstad at Reading may not even tell him about any approach!!!

Would be interesting to hear what Pardew has told Coppell in private about the Reading chairman

If Coppell does go then DK will be swamped with applications

People such as Curle and Dowie would love the job

Cotterill would be my best choice - he has learnt the hard way the value of loyalty and has had his fingers burnt re thinking "the grass is always greener" - he would be like Taylor at Hull if successful at BHA and other clubs come calling - like Steve Bruce at Brum he needs a solid 3 or 4 years at one club again like he had at Cheltenham

I also think that given good players at his disposal i.e. ours - he will play good football - he could only play long ball at Cheltenham as that is all they were capable of

Cotterill on a 3 yea deal is what we need

As Harty said on the phone in on Saturday - what would we do with Dowie once his looks have gone!!!

Kinnear or Dowie is what we need :)

We'll never all agree but one thing is for sure WE MUST NOT APPOINT FROM WITHIN!

Agreed. Don't know much about Dowie but seems to have done pretty well at Oldham. Still would prefer Kinnear though.

Kinnear was allegedly on 420k a year at Luton - why they are broke - there is no way we can afford anywhere near this

Kinnear is on the way down re managerial career

We need someone younger who will hang around for a bit

Dowie would love a job at a well run club that's solvent and does not promise what it cannot deliver; as would Cotterill as he has been out of work for nearly a year.

Either of them SIGNING a three year deal before appointed would be ok with me

Kinnear or Cotterill would be OK, but I'd prefer someone like Danny Wilson who has some pedigree and an Albion connection.

But he's under contract unfortunately, although that obviously doesn't bother some chairmen.

I'm not fussed about a new manager having an Albion connection. Didn't make Nobby hang around very long, did it?

Connections are forged through experiences gained. Get someone decent, not too decent as they'll only be poached, and that connection will develop and grow. Just need to hope they stick around long enough for it to happen.

And they didn't help Jimmy Case. In some ways it's better that there are no connections: start with a clean slate.

My preference would be for Dowie, experience at this level but new enough to management to bring fresh ideas. Also looking at him you know he must have a great personality.

As for an Albion connection, just think of the succesful managers we have had and then think how many of them have had an Albion connection (Cattlin maybe?).

Hove, f***ing ACTUALLY.
There is no way that Nigel Clough will even be interviewed.
Hartlepool and Carlisle have both turned him down previously after being interviewed due to lack of experience / acheivement, and we should be no different.
As we will not pay Oldham any compensation for Dowie, expect him to be in charge for the Brentford game at least.

Dowie it would be for me. Given how loyal he has proved to the Oldham cause up till now, the question would be whether he would walk away from it. I think he would for a far more stable job than the one he has.
