The woman is a hypocrite beyond belief. Apart from sending her kids to private school rather than the local comp in Hackney whilst cuddling up to Portillo on a Sunday Morning & talking bollocks, she makes crass comments like the one mentioned which if anyone of caucasian origin had made, would be up on a charge of inciting racial hatred pretty damn quick. Lets hope Abbott is hauled up & taken to task over this.

I despise racism. No matter racial background the original perpitrator came from - In this case Diane Abbott. There is discrimination in life against Britons of an ethnic origin. Comments like the one Abbott made don't help whatsoever.

I'd like to think Ed Milliband may withdraw the Labour Whip from her for a period but I don't hold out hope on that one.

At the end of the day it doesn't matter what she says because all BLACK people live in mud huts and kill each other with spears and eat each other.

Please don't take this post out of context as I'm ONLY referring to Central Africa in the 16th century, but I couldn't be bothered to write all that. Oh wait a minute, I just did. FUC............................

This country is so obsessed with racism, ageism, sexism etc, it's enough to make one try and claim political asylum in Afghanistan.

Indeed this would have never happened in Afghanistan

I quite like listening to Portillo (although my political views are at the other end of the spectrum) but I cannot watch him with Abbott because she makes my cringe with some of her comments on that show. He offers a point of view often quite refreshing - as only an ex minister can - and then she hangs on to his coat tails like an infatuated kid, smirking as if she is 'In on it' as well.
No love leave it.

I consider her to be a well balanced attention seeker. She has a chip on both shoulders.

she says she was talking about what colonial europeans done in the 15th/16th/17th centurieswhen exploring the new world.

to be fair, when you put it like that, i'll agree

but she complains about not having enough characters, the least she could have said europeans instead of white people.

besides, it's not as if europeans were the only eople up to this business. Mezoamerican tribes in the 15th century did as much dividing and conquering, if a little bit less. And I'm not sure but in the African Continent...Zimbabwe, Uganda, Congo, Sierra Leone, Libya, Egypt...have been dividing and conquering their own people!

Cheers - that makes sense now. Without the context it clearly sounds racist and as she's now admitted, it was done without context. Agree with what she says in terms of colonialism but incredibly stupid to tweet it without the context. As a general point which someone else here made more eloquently than I ever could, it is astonishing she has survived so long. Her performances on Andrew Neil's programme are almost always laughable and either Portillo is doing it because it makes him look good or he's getting great money.

She has a history of foot in mouth moments. She does however confront racism in the UK, and to deny it exists is a bit naive...for example, ive never been in a car that has been stopped for no apparent reason when with white people....its happened so many times over the years when ive been with 'ethnic' colleagues its unbelievable...so, black people do still suffer from it, and I would imagine her vibe is, whats good for them .......

Diane Abbott has jumped on the ' Bernie Grant / Trevor Phillips bandwagon '...i.e..." hang-on, there's a lot of money to be made by representing the poor down-trodden minorities and I intend to have my share and carry on pretending that it is all down to the goodness of my heart and not down to personal gain "
She is intellectually challenged...a lightweight...a figure of fun in most circles. These remarks are typically ill-thought-out and do her no favours. How she has had such a long career baffles me but then I suppose when you are in a rock-solid seat with a bedrock of black support, then you can't go wrong.

Even WITH the context it is racist, it's indefensible.

It's completely racist, no excuses or apologists.

As has been said, Abbott lost all credibility years ago. I'm not sure who it is she represents, but it certainly isn't the day to day concerns of the poor, or I suspect the black community.

Coming in to Parliament claiming to be a left-wing firebrand and then sending your kids to private school - you just can't do it. You could do it for your family - but just not at the same time as being a supposedly socialist Labour MP and preaching what she was preaching. Total hypocrite.

Didn't she make Jonathan Aitken godfather to one of her kids? Ridiculous. Just got intoxicated by the Houses of Parliament and lost the plot.

Oh do leave off, she doesnt confront racism, she IS racist, she has proved it in the past with other comments, your post is beyond ridiculous. what part of " West Indian mothers will go to the wall for their children" isnt racist ? it certainly implies that English ones wont, and why hasnt she ever been brought to book for telling us that blue eyed blond haired Finnish nurses were unsuitable for her constituents in Hackney because "they've never seen black people before" ? What do you think would have happened if a Tory MP in Surrey had said this " dark eyed curlyhaired congolese nurses were unsuitable for her constituents in virginia Water because "they've never seen white people before" ?

*** waits for someone to try and change the subject by complaining that the NHS is taking nurses from countries that need them more ***

Dont be bloody stupid.

As a white mulleted guy in the 80's I was stopped so often that I needed go to the police station to ask what it was all about.

Never really got an answer and forgot to tag this experience to some sort of prejudice or racism.

In actual fact looking back the police were probably using their own prejudices, age, type of car, time I was driving it etc. and I am guessing the police are using a similar criteria now when you or your colleagues are stopped.

It is hardly confirmation that racism is at work here.

She was also the very first person i encountered in my professional life who used the phrase 'do you know who I am' when I needed to check something about her.

A former work colleague of mine encountered the same response from Brian Adams. His response to Adams was classic. He eyed him up & down for a few seconds then responded in his thick west country accent: "No, never heard of you".
