Deserving the win

So often we hear about how a team deserves the win, or deserves more than what they got, or didn't deserve to lose etc.

Why?

When did we decide that an impotent attack coupled with an easily broken down defence is more deserving of a win than a stout defence and clinical forward line?

I mean, so often we see games where one team is almost constantly on the attack but can't finish, only to concede on the rare occasion that their opponents snatch a goal on the break.

We hear how the team that attacked for the whole game 'didn't deserve to lose' or were more deserving of the win. But why? If they weren't able to score or keep a clean sheet why do they deserve it more than the team that kept a clean sheet in the face of numerous attacks, and in their one foray forward, manage to get the job done?

I know sometimes there is an impressive defensive display (such as Brighton's defensive display against Luton in the second half) but generally, the team that plays attacking football is declared more deserving than the team that plays defensive football, even when the attack is impotent.

Why does this attitude exist?
