Thoughts?

Apols if fixtures.

Will obviously have some hilarious moments, but the lack of Stephen Merchant as co-writer slightly concerns me (see: The Invention of Lying).

Didn't he do this years and years ago before he was properly famous (after 11 O Clock Show but before the Office)?

It was a tad embarrasing then, presumably he's updated it to be less un-PC?

Nice, a 'comedy' about someone with mental illness, hilarious. Surely this sort of thing stopped being made in the 60s or 70s when people realised how unpleasant it was.

Looks like a car crash. Guess its only a one-off. Gervais is like marmite. He'll probably never reach those Office heights again with another sitcom.

Love 'The Office'. It's brilliant. But think it's Gervais playing himself in a sit-com they've basically borrowed ideas off of loads of other comedies.

Finally got round to watching Extras recently. Famous person plays caricature of themselves, awkward moment with disabled/minority/terminally ill person in EVERY f***ing episode.

I think Ricky Gervais is a pretty funny bloke who struck gold with one show.

Is always hard to tell from trailers what stuff will be like.

That being said I adore Karl Pilkington, and will be very interested to see what his first move into acting is like.

What do you reckon Nemesis?

Sorry mate it's just not working. I can't muster up the anger required (you utter c*nt).

Also apparently this Derek thing is just a one off. Probably for the best I reckon, not sure it has enough to be a whole series.

I agree this nemesis business is overrated. Plus you seem like a nice fella. Feud over.

Really hope Derek just means we have more of KP on telly in the long run. I truely believe he is a genius and the whole world needs exposure to him. Talks a lot of sense, if you can see through his strange ways.

I'm not entirely convinced that Ricky Gervais was ever actually funny per se, rather than just being himself, which seemed funny for a while, then wore off!

Maybe so Notters, but the office was superbly written.

I saw Stephen Merchant on his stand up tour last year and he was extremely funny.

I sometimes wonder if a large portion of Gervais' success can be attributed to his partnership with Merchant, and their complimentary writing styles and senses of humour.

Who has a mental illness? And how can you tell from those clips?

Well, reading about the programme, and watching those clips, it would appear to me the character has a mental illness or learning difficulties, or what ever the correct description for someone with this afliction is

"Derek is a simple soul with an unfortunate underbite and dodgy haircut, who views the world through innocent eyes. "

"Derek, a comedy about a man with learning difficulties who works in an old people’s home, "

Sadly, the comedy 'value' in the trailer seems to centre around Dereks condition. I didn't particularly like Andy in Little Britain either, I'm just not sure why there is comic value in people who some might consider less fortunate. I'm not being overly sensitive, forget the PC terminology, I don't find it funny when people poke fun at those who have mental issues.
