The Derby County captain Richard Keogh was injured in the car collision on Tuesday night that saw his teammates Mason Bennett and Tom Lawrence charged with drink-driving, Telegraph Sport has learned.
It is expected that Phillip Cocu will confirm the news that Keogh has a suspected fractured wrist and also injured his knee when the Derby head coach holds his weekly press briefing at lunchtime.
The details of the collision on the A6 in the Allestree area of Derby are still emerging but it is understood that Keogh was in the back seat of Lawrence’s Range Rover Sport which careered into the lamppost writing the lamppost off in the process.
The Derby squad were understood to have been on a club-sanctioned night out Ten Pin Bowling before the crash took place. Keogh, 33, is not expected to play against Birmingham City on Saturday having been an ever-present so far this season. Derby are struggling with just one win from eight games and currently sit 18th in the Championship.
The club are pursuing an internal investigation into the incident and intend to establish exactly what happened in advance of the court hearing for Lawrence and Bennett next month. Keogh went for a scan on his injuries following the collision and it is not yet certain when he will be ready to return to playing which is a massive blow to the club. The Republic of Ireland international is a club legend with eight years’ service and more than 350 senior appearances. Bennett is considered one of the brightest prospects outside of the Premier League and it is understood Derby turned down two bids in excess of £25m for his services over the summer.
Derbyshire police confirmed some details around the collision in a statement on Tuesday. “Two men have been charged with drink driving after a collision involving a Range Rover Sport and a Mercedes GLC at the junction of Burley Hill and the A6 at Allestree, last night shortly before midnight (Tuesday, 24 September).
"Mason Bennett, 23, of Whaley Thorns near Mansfield and Tom Lawrence, 25, of Duffield were arrested at the scene and charged earlier today. They are due to appear at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates Court on Tuesday, 15 October at 9.30am.”

According to the BBC version of events, the club did lay on transport for them but they chose to do a Duffy instead.
"They should have known when to stop and also ignored the opportunity to be driven home using cars laid on by the club, and chose to stay out."
