All the nice villages are north of derby edna.
I'm toying with heading up fairly early, not sure yet as depends on my car-sharers, any pleasant local villages around the area that would be worth a stop (I mean for pub & food maybe) before we make into Derby itself?

I agree with paris, derby is a hole made me proud to come from brighton.
But one thing derby does have is cracking real ale houses. The flowerpot is easily the best..it's got about 20 real ales and nice people in there.
The brunswick by the station is the next great pub. They brew 5 ales on site. This is the best pub for the football.
After that the silk mill, exeter, dolphin and smith field are all decent boozers.
The exeter had hop head on last time I went in there.
If you're coming from the south, then you could drop off in Melbourne, nice enough place from the North or west, you're spoilt for choice, just drive.....

The Melbourne Arms is a very good curry house and bar - highly recommended (or was about 3 years ago). If you take that route you'll go through Swarkestone afterwards, which is also well worth a stopover. There's a nice pub just over the bridge - I think it's called the Crewe & Harpur.
