See UEFA can be tough as long as it isn't racism related

Sweden have been awarded a 3-0 victory against Denmark by UEFA following last Saturday's abandoned UEFA EURO 2008™ qualifier.

Nyon hearing
UEFA's Control and Disciplinary Body discussed today the events at the Group F fixture at Copenhagen's Parken Stadium. German referee Herbert Fandel abandoned the qualifier in the closing stages with the scores level at 3-3. He had awarded a penalty to Sweden and given a red card to Denmark's Christian Poulsen when a spectator came on to the pitch and assaulted him.

Copenhagen ban
As well as awarding the match to Sweden by default, the Danish Football Association (DBU) has been fined 100,000CHF (€61,000) and ordered to play their next four home UEFA EURO 2008™ qualifiers at least 250km from Copenhagen. These matches are the games against Liechtenstein (12 September), Spain (13 October), Latvia (17 October) and Iceland (21 November). The Liechtenstein match will also have to be played behind closed doors. Once in possession of the written grounds, the DBU will have three days to appeal the decision.

Am I the only one who can't hlep feeeling that this punishment is disporportionate to the crime?

Obviously that fan's behaviour was completely wrong, and he should be punished for it. But to deny anyone from the entire country's population from attending the next four matches seems way over the top. Unless there is something extra in this.

I wonder if UEFA are quite so keen to punish the Italian and Spanish FAs for their ongoing lack of control within their remits.

Edit: Oops. Just re-read the punishment. Still OTT though.

Don't think the punishment is at all inappropriate as long as they are consistent in future........not somrthing any of the football authorities are renowned for!

If fans at all levels understand that assaulting players and officials results in a severe punishment to their team no matter what, then they will stop doing it and we will all be better off.

NOW apply the same strictures to racism

I don't think they had any choice about the points, Sweden never even got to take their penalty to make it 4-3.

They've left some room to ease off on the rest of it on appeal, maybe back to one/two games outside Copenhagen.

They couldn't award a goal that wasn't scored, they had to punish Denmark, and if the penalty had gone ahead under all the pitch invasions and aggressions and been missed, the Danes would have been perceived to have gained something from their intimidation.

As for Poulsen, what is happening with him? His 'foul' was a blatant physical assault, does he get a big ban?

Poulsen got a 3 match ban and has been reported by some Danish student to the police for violence (bloody stoodents). Although unlikely to be charged they have to consider the case. In the meantime he has grovelled apologetically on all the TV stations and in all newspapers. The fat Dane that attacked the ref has apologised to the nation but is in hiding and crapping his pants.

i feel the punishment too harsh for the crime, it would be fairer to punish the individual not the county,

I think its a too harsher punishment for Spain and Northern Ireland, as if one of them finish joint second on points with Sweden. Then Sweden will have the upperhand on goal difference. Would rather them have been awarded a 4-3 win

The fan didn't affect the scoreline though did he?

A fairer punishment would've been a points deduction and to let the 3-3 scoreline stand.

UEFA have more than likely just handed the group to Sweden.

I would have made Poulson and the fan have a a proper fight on TV as a statement to show the damage violence can do.
