Delta plane crashes and flips upside down at Toronto airport

At least 18 people were injured in the crash at Canada’s Toronto Pearson International Airport, according to authorities. The Delta Air Lines flight with 80 people on board from Minneapolis ended upside down on the runway, and one passenger described hanging “like bats” inside the aircraft after it crashed.

All on board the Delta flight from Minneapolis survived, but it is still unclear how the aircraft was upended, leaving it belly-up with at least 18 people injured — including a child who is reported to be in good condition.

What’s weird is that the local fire chief in his press conference very clearly stated that the runway was dry and that there were no cross winds. But it is also clear from video footage at the time the plane was being sprayed on its back that there was snow on e ground (and there had been up to 50cms in the preceding 48 hours, and that pilots were warned of 40mg cross winds. It’s very clear that landing conditions would have been weather affected, but the fire chief comes straight out and says not. There must be video footage of the thing flipping and the wing coming off, but it’s not been released yet.

Watched another video recorded by someone while they're getting off the upside down plane (wtf?) and you see people getting off with their hand luggage from the overhead lockers (double wtf).
I guess the over-head lockers will be easier to reach on an upside down plane?

I’ve just seen ground based footage of the location, and there is very clearly heavy snow, and the windsock is fully horizontal in strong winds. No idea how the fire chief could say dry runway and no sidewinds.

Passengers had not been advised to prepare for a hazardous landing, one interview shown on news TV now, so can only conclude that all landing settings and hydraulics were functioning as expected. The plane‘s attitude rolled sharply right about 20 feet before landing, so all the weight and stress went on to the right wing landing gear, which collapsed, then very quickly the right wing tip took huge load and the wing detached. Then it flipped onto its back. Miraculous survival rate.

Video of an Airline pilot's take on this accident. He suggests that a gust of wind caused the plane to stall just before landing and caused a heavy landing which resulted in the landing gear breaking off, before possibly hitting a snow bank which caused it to flip over.

While this is very scary it really is incredible how robust these tubes are innit - still very pleased I got my four flights in January out of the way

Toronto Fire Chief, Todd Aitken, said the runway at Toronto Pearson Airport was dry and with no cross-wind conditions.

“What we can say is the runway was dry and there was no cross-wind conditions,” Aitken said.

Delta's DEI Stance Called Out After Toronto Plane Crash

Although the cause of the crash has not yet been determined some took to X to blame DEI for the incident, pointing to Delta's commitment to DEI initiatives after the attacks from the White House on such policies.

"Delta airlines hire based on DEI and will not hire based on merit. I will no longer fly delta," X user Heather Bear wrote.

Delta has not said that it does not hire based on merit.

After Trump's executive orders on his first day in office, which saw many institutions, including Google and Amazon, retreat from their commitment to DEI initatives, Delta reaffirmed their commitment.

"We are steadfast in our commitments because we think that they are actually critical to our business," Peter Carter, Delta's chief external affairs officer, told FOX5 Atlanta. Carter further emphasized that DEI is about talent—a key focus of the airline—and is integral to its long-term sustainability.
