Sanchez needs to start releasing the ball quicker and long when we defend a corner he claims and players bust a gut getting upfield. I wanted to run onto the pitch and push him over a few times yesterday

Yep. I like that.

But maybe (especially yesterday) he was told not to do so.

I watched it too.

First, if I stick to my earlier narrarive, that we set up to be hard to beat which included not taking on risky passes near the box that, if intercepted, would have set them up on a counter, then they were simply obeying orders.

If so, this may or may not be the correct approach. This depends on how good our players are, how good Potter thinks they are, and how we set up.

If so, then Potter simply did not say (and maybe has not said) 'right lads, lets go for it and take every chance that presents itself'.

The alternative is that Potter normally (maybe not yesterday) does say 'come on lads, take some risks, go for goal!' but the players freeze, either because they are not that great, or because they are not coached well enough to have the nous or vim to give it the full Robin Friday.

I don't know what the answer is, or if or when Bloom may blink.

But I do remember we were nearly all drooling about the football and the points on the boad not so long ago.

It is possible to over analyse things, and see patterns that don't exist.

Shearer the Monday Night Quarterback?

So maybe splashing £50m on a proven goalscorer is not the missing piece in becoming a regular top 10 side, if the final ball is rarely played.

Which is why I had to put bw2 on ignore.

We clearly want to play like Liverpool, with three fast clever men up front rather than Callum Wilson, Glenn Murray or Glenn Wilson.

Unfortunately we are Brighton, not Liverpool.

We could flog a couple of the greyhounds and bring in a donkey, but this would just make a lot of us a bit sad.

The solution is to slowly build the club so we become more appealing to young strikers, with the quality and nous improving all across the pitch.

Do we trust Potter and co to do all that building? Personally, apart from Klopp himself, I couldn't think of anyone better suited to the job.

In the meantime however, be prepared for the club to go on some shitty runs. It's a long game and, personally, I'm in.

If you have to 'coach' a 25 year old EPL striker all the stuff he's been doing all his life, then frankly you've signed a sub-prime player. Might be unfashionable to say so, but, sorry, it IS pure instinct

It could be a bit of both, though. If strikers put the ball in the net sometimes, then the midfield will have the confidence to keep trying that final killer pass... because the confidence grows that it will lead to something.

My decision would be to employ a better ( or even 'An' ) attacking coach

Whoever is responsible is either crap, deliberately trying to not win, or both.

But surely if he HAD been told not to release the ball early and long yesterday, then our other players would have known that and not bust a gut to get forward ? :albion2:

It would also mean they spent the first 20mins ignoring those instructions. Because we started the game playing it fast and long and caused them trouble, turning their defence, getting in behind. Until they scored, then we stopped doing it.

If only we had a recently retired footballer who has scored goals at Premier League level and knows the club we could call on to help us out…

Good point.

Perhaps the answer is that the players were asked to bomb on when they opportunity arose but that the keeper was told not to hoof it unless it looked like a really good break.

No, I'm floundering a bit now. I'm beginning to think that either the players or the coaching are all a bit 'lower third of the table'....

I know it's just me, but he was seriously doing my head in. Like a kid on an aeroplane who keeps kicking the back of your seat :lolol:

He’s there every game to the side of the press box, as is Bruno but he was touchline yesterday

Exactly, maddening for me.

In fairness virtually every long kick he did do came back off VVD’s head

Agree, at least 3 opportunities to release Trossard / March on a one on one situation in the first half alone, sure there’s a chance we will give up possession in trying, but why not try?

It’s almost like we need instant success on a tactic before it’s validated or considered further

MotD review of our perforyesterday performance

We keep moaning about lack of striker but what was interesting was Shearer review on our final ball - “poor decision making and lack of quality” and showed examples from March, Macallister, Trossard and Maupay . So we are not giving ourselves the best chance to score so even if we signed Kane we’d not give him the ball in space to score. So if it’s that obvious why has Potter and his team not worked on this? Or is it that decision making/quality you pay twice the money for.

The other thing I noticed yesterday was how often Liverpool players seemed to find themselves in miles of free space - either great coaching on Klopp’s part or lack of focus from our players?

I think it's lack of focus, start of the season we were getting the balls into the box just not converting them. We have slowed down going forward. It seems that we must play at least 20 passes before getting ball in the area.
