Deam Hammond - played well IMO.

One day UB will have the guts to call for McGhee's resignation given that he keeps picking donkeys like Park Footballer and Trolley. But meanwhile, back in the real world...............

High up on the South Downs.
We have now got to build the midfield around Dean Hammond and give him the extended run in the team that he should have had a long time ago.

As for the Oatway debate; Hammond has the ability and strength to make Oatway (and Nicolas) better players.

What are you on about? Oh sorry I do not rate some players, got it. Why at present would I call for McGhee's resignation, somehow we are keeping our heads above water. Do not have to agree with everything he does, just like I do not have to agree with you.

I don't have to UB, I just wait for the team sheet every week and when its announced, I have a quiet chuckle. I expect to be doing the same next Monday :) Do you?

On the displays that I have seen from Hammond, he is by far a more effective midfielder than Oatway. He will score more goals, stronger, taller and a better all-round player than Oatway.

When Hammond came on we looked a much more effective team, even with Oatway still there. I agree that Oatway will probably start, after all you can't drop the captain can you? I think Nicolas will make way for him.

Oh dear, I think somebody will be along in a minute to give us a long winded account of why Oatway should never be dropped.

Charlie Oatway should never be dropped because .........ha, ha do me a favour. He's looked short of class in every division, and he's drowning now. He has apparently got loads of middle names though. Fantastic.

It is OK, he normally comes off shift in a minute, so just wait for the long reason why Mark will never drop Charlie and then rest of us are wrong and if we dare to say different a quick put down will be used.....

Hammond is the most underrated, under used player we have.
Why is he never given a chance, i know we have our methods of playing, but surley there is room for a midfielder that wins tackles, plays simple passes to our team, runs his socks off and gets from box to box.
i am a massive fan of his, and he should be given a chance. he always is a class apart from everyone in the reserve games ive watched, and he has always performed well when in the first team. but i guess leon knight will always be picked ahead of him in the vital midfield spot

To be fair Mr Irish, you were convinced we were going to be OK in midfield against Wigan (do you remember the thread on Monday where I said I was worried about our midfield but you said we'd be alright with Oatway and Nicolas because they'd chase down space)

Yet apparently we were completely outclassed in the middle of the park so some people are understandably suggesting that Hammond might have more to offer than Oatway.

Given the Wigan result and the way the game went, your blind faith in McGhee regarding his loyalty to Oatway seems somewhat puzzling to me.

Dean Hammond must play in the centre of midfield and not be wasted on the right side of midfield as he often was earlier in the season.

This has been the trouble with Nicolas on too many occasions: forced to play wide, which simply wastes his talents and makes it very difficult for him to do well - and moved there to accomodate Oatway. While Charlie's been excellent for large parts of the season, he's been somewhat poor of late, and with Hammond showing well against Wigan, I reckon he should make way like any other under-performing player.

Well, that was one game's evidence that has to be balanced over an entire season's worth of performances. Level-headed managers like McGhee are not prone to panic fits over one game, he leaves that to NSC contributors. Hammond is a rising talent, but to say he would have made a significant difference to the Wigan game had he been on from the start is a little fanciful, old chap.

Nicolas has only played on the flank twice this entire season, and only one of those times for about 20 minutes a few months ago. He started in what you say is his best position against Wigan on Tuesday. Did you think he played well?

Re. Charlie being "somewhat poor of late", McGhee said Charlie was "excellent" against Plymouth. I say this only because I don't want you to be too disheartened when the team-sheet for Reading appears next Monday, I'm just trying to soften the blow for you.

I assume you were at Plymouth??

No one played well thus the 5-1 drumming

Yeah I was there. I disagree, we weren't "outplayed" 5-1, we got at least 3 appalling decisions that either chalked off or created goals (Butters goal, Chadwick push, Shabaan handling). In between, we did make the odd mistake (Hinsh for 1st goal, Butters for 4th). Yes, our midfield didn't work, but there was some good performances, McGhee singled out Leon, OGH and Oatway, and I think that's fair comment.
