Ask by The Smiths
I’m not sure I really do favourites in an exclusive sense but if I have a group that I go back to time and time again it is The Smiths.
If There is a light… is my all-time favourite song then Ask is the one that comes next. The mid 80s was that period when 12″ singles were the thing to buy and you would expect to get a couple of meaty Trevor Horn remixes for your money. So when I bought Ask as 12″ and all you got for it was 2:59 of magic on one side and just over 5 minutes on the other you did wonder about value for money.
But the song was a little extra special for us as it was playing a lot when we got engaged. There were no buck-toothed girls from Luxembourg involved but it, of course, did have the immortal lines
Because if it’s not Love
Then it’s the Bomb, the Bomb, the Bomb, the Bomb, the Bomb, the Bomb, the Bomb
That will bring us together
