Firstly an apology if this has already been done, I can't find out as the search doesn't appear to be be working!

If you’ve not come across it, the 30 day song challenge sets out to answer over 30 days (hence the name, I guess) a series of questions about your taste in music, where it hits the magic spot and frankly where it misses. I've just done this journey on my blog and got lots of reaction so thought I'd kick off each day with NSC so you can add your bits – argue with me however you feel.

The complete list is here: 30 Day Song Challenge

So starting with Day 1: Your favourite Song

One of my favourite songs had to come from The Smiths’ 1986 classic The Queen Is Dead. Although not necessarily my favourite album of all time TQID is one that shaped what I like more than anything else and of all the classic songs it had to be this one.

What more would you want from a song – love, death, driving around in cars and generally being a teenager. Johnny Marr creating a magical melody and Morrissey at his most – well, Morrisseyness I suppose.

I believe this is unique in leading you in to a chorus of double-decker buses and ten tonne trucks. I’ve not done the Desert Island thing yet but this surely joins me on the sand with my gramaphone, Holy Bible and Complete Works of Shakespeare.

And as we clearly haven’t tired yet of the Olympics a little bit of Smiths trivia – we all remember the bit where the seven young athletes lit the flames at the end of that amazing opening ceremony, and the individual flames come together to form the larger torch . Codenamed There is a Light That Never Goes Out! So maybe Danny Boyle shares my love for this song as well…

I can also confirm from my trip to the stadium there that the Smiths also formed part of the playlist for the athletics. Even Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now.

And finally. how many Smiths does it take to fix a lighbulb?

None, because there is a light that never goes out.

enjoy…

This is one of my favourite songs. Cant say I have an actual favourite as too many to name. It was number one in John Peels Festive 50 1998 and was released on Chemikal Underground records which the band were responsible for running. The lead singer Emma Pollock recently played at the Green Door Store with R M Hubbert.

As per the other replies I genuinely can't say that I have one outright favourite song, but for the purposes of this thread I'll go for:

Not heard it before - great song if a dark and deeply disturbing video!

Are Chemikal Underground still going? I remember buying bis' 'Secret Vampire Soundtrack' EP on that label - great days.

I remember that being played on Top Of The Pops of all places. Yes still going and many bands still on the label including The Phantom Band who are worth a listen
