That's all well and good, but you don't expect our Prime Minister to be showing off about how he had our Monarch 'purring' down the phone at him to the Mayor of New Year. He simply shouldn't be talking like that, especially not to a foreign dignitary.

Indeed. God only knows how he would have exaggerated the news to the Commander of Christmas or the Head Honcho of Hannukah.

You do realise it has nothing to do with what the Queen's or Cameron's opinion is on the matter, it is the fact that in NY to the NY mayor, our PM gloated about how he had our Monarch 'purring' down the phone to him. In fact, it doesn't matter what the issue is or the relevance of it, anybody with half a brain and an ounce of awareness of what respect is knows he shouldn't have been talking in those terms, and no doubt he was horrified when he found out he'd be overheard.

She isn't my Monarch and anyone with less than 50% of the vote like Cameron cannot be referred to as 'our' PM IMO. I respect those who deserve it, not those who benefit from the patronage system of this country. And yes I do have more than half a brain, I just don't agree that its an issue...

He didn't ask 'Can I stroke your pussy?' To get her purring, did he?

No, what he actually said was:

"The Scots have voted no, ma'am
Independence was a whim
I can tell that you're excited
So can I stroke your quim?"

I totally disagree. It is an insult to the intelligence of the British public that the Queen puts on this front of remaining impartial. Whilst I don't expect her to be grabbing Alex Salmond by the scrotum and leading him to the gallows an acknowledgement that she is personally pleased at the outcome wouldn't go amiss.

Repressing one's emotions and statements to this extent is like something out of the 19th century.

Whilst Cameron shouldn't have said what he said the point is both he and the Queen were desperate for a NO vote, so you'd expect both to have been ecstatic at the news. Had she expressed even a modicum of pleasure in an official statement then the impact of this story would be hugely diminished.

She has to remain impartial - if Scotland had voted to become an independent country it would have become a constitutional monarchy and that is likely to remain the situation if it votes Yes at some time in the future. A number of countries that are 'left wing' in comparison to the UK prefer the neutrality of a monarchy and the SNP was always campaigning for a return to the original 'union of thrones'.

To introduce a pro/anti royalty argument in a debate like this (as others have done) is self-indulgent and irrelevant: we are where we are.

Bit of a non-story really. Especially compared with what the previous prime minister said, when he thought he was out of earshot, about one of his own supporters.

We are talking about our monarch here, not some bigoted old lady.
