Danny Welbeck On Course for the Best Season of His Career

Brighton striker Danny Welbeck is on course for the best season of his career in the Premier League. The 33-year-old scored his fifth league goal of the campaign in the Seagulls’ 1-0 victory over Newcastle at St James’ Park.

Welbeck has never scored double digits in a Premier League season before. The Englishman netted nine times for Manchester United in the 2011/12 and 2013/14 campaigns, while the most he has managed in a Brighton shirt so far is six goals in a season.

The match-winner against Newcastle had to go off injured in the final stages of the game in the North East. Seagulls fans will be hoping the setback does cause him to be off the pitch for too long.

Brighton Pushing for European Place

The Brighton striker’s hot form is one of the reasons Brighton are pushing for a European spot this season. They are 2/1 to finish in the top six at the end of the year for those placing bets on on betFIRST Sport on the Premier League.

Brighton have never finished higher than sixth place in the top flight of English football. They achieved the club-record position in the 2022/23 season when Roberto De Zerbi was in charge. Current head coach Fabian Hurzeler will have eyes on an even better campaign this year. If he can lead his team to the top four, it would be enough to qualify for the UEFA Champions League next year.

The Seagulls also remain in contention for the two domestic cup competitions this season. They have a tie with Liverpool to look forward to in the EFL Cup following victories over Crawley Town and Wolverhampton Wanderers respectively, while their FA Cup campaign begins in January.

Possible England Call-Up

With the form Welbeck is showing, he is likely to be in contention for a call-up to the England squad. His last appearance for the national team came at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. The striker featured in the Three Lions’ final group game against Belgium.

England are next in action in November for Nations League action. They travel to Greece on the 14th of November, while three days later, their final game of the group comes at home to Ireland at Wembley. Interim head coach Lee Carsley will pick the squad for those two games.

From the 1st of January, former Chelsea and PSG manager Thomas Tuchel will take over the reins of the national team. Tuchel knows English football well, so he will be aware of what Welbeck can deliver on the pitch.

Tuchel is set to watch a lot of Premier League football before he begins his new job. If Welbeck can keep up his hot form, he may be part of the German’s plans for the World Cup qualifying campaign in 2025.

With so much football left to be played in the 2024/25 campaign, Welbeck and Brighton still have a lot of work to do, but confidence should be high in the dressing room following an excellent start to the season.
