Just looked into it a bit. Because it was the message they refused to effectively print, that was deemed OK, they weren't discriminating about the people who requested it. If they had however refused to make a cake on the basis that a gay person had asked for it, then that would have been discriminatory, I think?

So, legally, can Coutts shut down Farage's bank account because they don't want to be associated with him due to his political beliefs?
As I understand it, as a private bank, it can.

This is interesting reading.

Because of his privileged upbringing he was deemed worthy of an account with Coutts, the Private Bank to the rich and famous. This private company then decided that once his mortgage had finished he wasn't profitable enough to keep the account, so he was offered an alternative.



It's a private bank, not a utilities company or a public service :facepalm:

"Turning utter entitlement into victimhood.”

But the funniest part of this is watching his supporters rushing to defend "his rights" knowing that Coutts, Farage nor anyone else involved in this pathetic little non-story, wouldn't piss on them if they were on fire :lolol:

The whole point of customer service is the service provider has terms and conditions. The provider, no matter what the service is, has the right to withdraw the service.
It’s not that simple even though many here think it is. Funny how many self confessed liberals are failing to see that point as it’s not suiting their narrative.

I find it interesting that those tumbling over themselves to defend Farrage's 'right' to have an account at a private bank (noting that Farrage has certainly been wronged by 'dame' blabbermouth) includes the contingent that are the first to sneer at a person's right to not be discriminated against on the grounds of race, religion, sexuality and (of course) gender. How very predictable.

No, he thinks he's going to divide and conquer again in a hilarious attempt to keep a populist government he's not a member of in power, because "woke" and also because "socialism".

To close someone's bank account is a very powerful tool, and the banks have links with each other so once one account is closed it can be hard to get a replacement. Farage would be able to cope because he's rich enough, but what about when someone less well off has no bank account? They don't pay social security in cash, and many places won't take cash anyway (including, obviously, anything booked by internet).

If banks are to be allowed to close accounts willy-nilly, there ought to be something else in place. The Post Office used to be the ultimate safety net, but not since privatisation. Everyone ought as a minimum to be guaranteed (in today's semi-cashless society) a current account with debit card. If it has no permitted overdraft there is very limited risk of loss to the bank.

It is staggering that Farage gets any airtime at all, given the lies he has told, the dodgy company he keeps and the fact he has never been elected as an MP of the HoC despite standing and failing on a number of occasions. The Coutts description of him as a "disingenuous grifter" sums him right up.

Nat West offered him an account which he rejected as "not suitable".

1. Nigel Farage was 'debanked' for holding views that were not in alignment with Coutts bank, nothing to do with whether he fell below the banks financial threshold, as originally stated.
2. Alison Rose then briefed a BBC journalist about the financial business of one of the banks customers (Nigel Farage)

If this were a non story as some of you are saying and there was no wrongdoing then why have both Alison Rose and now the Coutts Bank boss both resigned?

Farage was offered an alternative NatWest account. This is merely a privately-owned posh members club bank, and an individual with an over-extended sense of entitlement.

Before this story who had ever heard of banks excluding ordinary people? The British people are being played here by Farage, the right-wing media and an opportunistic government.

Nat West is almost 40% owned by the taxpayer and Alison Rose was presiding over a large increase in profitability, so benefitting us all. Farage has f*cked us yet again.

1. He was de-banked because he holds views that are not in alignment with Coutts bank AND recently fell below the banks financial threshold. We don't know what would have happed if he had enough money with them or a big enough mortgage. As far as I can tell, that was legal and all above board.
2. Yes.

Rose has resigned because she disclosed private financial information, the Coutts Bank boss has resigned, it seems, because the whole thing has been a clusterfuck in PR terms.

But there is something in place. The 9 biggest banks are legally required to provide basic banking services. This has already been highlighted.



Can you not just read the thread before you wade in?
