I can't stand the way they're trying to live on someone else's land by saying 'you can't evict us! It's RACIST!'

The sad fact is all the Liberal cronies they now have on their side who say 'oh it's rahlly rahlly unfahr to treat these people like this.'

They set up camp by the lawn memorial graveyard because they thought they were allowed to. Straight after we buried my Grandfather. It was most unsavoury..

The funniest thing this morning though was a lady saying she was an irish traveller via webcam on Sunday Morning Live..cushty house, middle class accent, acting like a victim. Discuss.

Are you not allowed to be an Irish Traveller and make pots of money and have a fine house?

As far as I know, the descendants of this guy are still on the road:- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pat_Collins_(showman)

Founder of a dynasty of showmen, a Liberal MP in the 1920s, Mayor of Walsall in 1938, and a legend in his community. But they are still Irish Travellers.

Using the logic of The Irish Travellers, it would have been acceptable to just pitch up on the land at Falmer & build a stadium without planning permission?

Using that man as an example that all travellers are salt of the earth would be nothing more than an exceptional case. For every decent one, the other 99 are nothing more than thieving vagabonds who contribute nothing to a local community & leave a trail of crap & destruction wherever they pitch up 'home'.

The reason so many of them pitch up here is because the law in Ireland is so much tougher when it comes to illegal pikey camps.

Hasn't this argument been done to death already?

Anyway fwiw, no it's not racist to evict the travellers from illegally developed land. Rules is rules, they have to go and the council should have dealt with it earlier.
Find the more nasty abuse of travellers in general very distasteful.

Since when is being an Irish Traveller a race? It might, just might be a nationality. Never a race.

Enforcing peoples property rights, and enforcing the law, is not racist.

This post, however, is.

They own the land actually. Howver whether they should be allowed to put up what are in effect semi-permanent residences on the green belt without planning permission is another matter. Ironic that the way the Govt want to change the planning laws would actually make this more easy.

I can't make my mind up about this one. On the one hand if more Councils made places available for Travellers instead of coming over all nimby as soon as one or two caravans appear over the horizon this wouldn't be a problem. If that's their culture and the way they want to live, fine; I'll hold their coats. (Personally I can't abide the thought of living with a chemical toilet but there you go !).

But driving a coach and horses (or caravan these days!) through planning regs shouldn't be allowed if you are a Romany, a Romanian or a Ringmerian.
